recoil reducer on auto's

I read a lot about recoil reducers for the benelli m-1 and sbe. My question is, if those shot guns rely on you holding them firmly against your shoulder for something to push against to work the action, wouldn't a recoil reducer take away from that solid opposing forse and not let the action cycle light shells?

I do know that a SBE shot from the hip WILL NOT load the next round no matter how hard and firm you try to hold it.
