I've got a number of Benchmade and Cold Steel knives, they are high quality. But, my two favorites and the ones I carry are the Spyderco Native and my latest, a Buck 882 Police Utility Knife.

For me, the only knife I carry is a Leatherman basic utility folding knife. It's got a good edge on the blade, and I've used the pliers and wire cutters numerous times as well as the screw drivers. A darn site better than the swiss army knife and more compact. ;)

I've had (and still have) much sharper, better looking knives... but my favorite pocketknife is still a cheap little stainless Parker of some sort that my brother gave me. It's a short, fat-bladed little buggar with a VERY slim profile and it's stainless all over (no extra material on body.) It's my favorite because I can throw it in any pair of pants and forget it's there.

I carry a small Browning knife with a three-inch locking blade and a smaller blade with no lock. It fits in my pocket easily, even with all my keys in there with it.
For hunting and for those occasions when I can't carry a gun, I have a Buck folding hunter. I sharpen it up every fall before deer season and again afterward if I cut up a deer with it.
I have some fixed blade knives around but don't use them much. A Kershaw "Bear Hunter" has seen some use.

A CRKT Ryan Model 7 (http://www.crkt.com/ryansevn.html) is my number 1 knife. Great feel, balance, solid construction. I like the finger choil, and the large blade. I've been carrying mine for over 2 years now.

Folding: CRKT M16-14 "Big Dog." I've owned a whooooole bunch of lockbacks in my time, and the CRKT is my favorite by a very large margin. I bought it for $85, at first not sure if a knife with four-inch blade and nine-inch OAL was a wise choice for a daily carry. But it's very slim and has a stout pocket clip and packs very easily--even easier than my last daily carry, a Gerber LST with pocket clip. The M16 is truely a one-handed knife that's practical; you can open it very easily (a little too easily - explained below) and close without having to flip it around in your hand. The big blade makes cuts easy, and I guess it could be used as a backup to the 1911.
On the easy opening - I once moved to stick it in my waistband and bumped the opening stud. The point of the blade came out just enough to jab me in the thumb. A small cut, but you bet your ass now I'm very aware of what part of the knife I'm touching when I pocket it.
Fixed: I can't for the life of me remember the model of Gerber fixed blade I have and enjoy. It's not as big as the other fixed blades I own; I seem to like the larger folders and smaller fixed-blades. It's similar to the Gerber Gator except an older version that came with two Zytel sheaths; one for regular belt carry and the other for vertical, horizontal or chain-around-the-neck carry. Either sheath puts the belt at about the midpoint of the knife; most other fixed-blades I have put the belt at the top of the sheath, so you have almost the entire length of the knife banging against your leg. For urban carry, the Gerber is tops. Relatively short OAL, but thick-spined and scary sharp.

I met custom knife maker Ed VanHoy at a gun show yesterday and picked up a CRKT produced Van Hoy Snap Lock for $40. Coolest thing I ever saw this side of pocket guns! He had handmade versions for something like $700  . They flip open from the front and look like a piece of sculpture! I'm still working to get the hang of opening it. Gerber folder all the time.
Fixed: Cold Steel Kobun and/or a Gerber Urban Defender(?).
The Gerbers are made of good steel, and the fixed blade is compact enough to conceal a few different ways on my rather scrawny frame. The Cold Steel pretty much stays at my boot when I wear it.
My next knife will be a crkt M16-13LE to replace the Gerber folder.

Current daily carry is a CRKT KISS with the paritally serrated Wharncliffe blade. Small, discrete and it handles all of the cutting chores I routinely encounter. Used to carry a CRKT M16-03 carbon fiber, but I screwed around and left it laying in a pile of papers and my wife threw it out by mistake. I paid $30 for an $80 knife and it got thrown out!!!!!!
When I feel like carrying something different it's either a CRKT Mirage with the clip removed or a Cold Steel Voyager XL with a fully serrated Tanto blade. The Cold Steel is 12" long when open, but it fits my hand great and is surprisingly easy to carry. It is also the only knife I own that has drawn blood, one was a small cut on my finger, the other was a 1" cut under my eye that required 12 stitches (the last one was on the top of my bottom eyelid). It was a b'day gift from my wife....lol.

This is about as "Off-Topic" as I have ever strayed ... but has anyone else checked out Kelsey's webpage (url in the signature in the previous post)? In addition to the products that he carries ... which include Browning knives ... there ... I got back on topic ;) he has some REALLY well written articles there ... I just read a couple and was impressed enough to comment. Great Job! I especially like the response to PETA ... I think that too many of us haven't really thought about the best way to respond to that part of the population that has never left their urban environment and therefore doesn't understand the beauty of the hunting experience.
Thanks Kelsey ...

Hmmmm. . . . maybe the moderator should participate in the thread, huh?
My fav folder is my Spyderco Native III. I had an original Native that was my first Spydie, and I loved it dearly, but I left it in my wife's car one night and it happened to be the night some kid ripped off her stereo and my pocket knife. Last year a good friend had a new Native III sent to me, and let me tell ya, they've only improved the thing. I loved my old one, but this holds an edge better (better steel) is much more comfortable to use, and the clip is about a hundred times better (frankly, the old style clip was an annoyance at times.)
Fixed blade? Alan Folts "Mantis." It's not really a utilitarian knife, but I use a folder for most of that anyway. It's very good at what it's designed to do, which is hide out almost anywhere on your person, weigh next to nothing, and yet give a very good poking/slicing blade with a hand-filling, secure, ergonomic grip.

I've got fancier folders, but my Gerber EZ out has dressed out my last 3 or 4 deer with no muss, no fuss. I'm sure the Beretta or Spyderco would work well too.
Kershaw makes some light, inexpensive fixed blade knives with great ergonomics and nonskid grip. The skinner works like a dream.

Never liked my SOG Flash. I like my ACFK, black 4". Very easy to slip in the front pocket, slim yet grippy. However now a PM9 lives in that pocket by itself, so I'm down to carrying a Sodbuster Jr. in my back pocket.

Fixed: Don't really have a favorite. I do like my Kathleen Tomey Day Hiker, but I haven't carried it enough to determine if I "really" like it.
The Sebenza has ruined me on any folder short of "pretty" slipjoints. I was at Smoky Mtn Knifeworks this weekend and I barely looked at any knives. I ended up buying a Gerber pocket steel and a jar of pickled okra.

My latest addition and current favorite is the "Rattweiler" from Swamp Rat Knife Works www.swampratknifeworks.com
It sports a 7 1/2 X 1/4 inch blade of SR 101 high carbon steel, black crinkle finish, OD green micarta grips, a skullcrusher pommel and a lanyard hole (mandatory, IMO). It came with a cordura sheath with kydex stiffener and was $200 - it is one outstanding bladefor the money!! I would HIGHLY recommend it to all!
I also have a Cold Steel Recon Scout that I have used for years - it has a 7 1/2 X 5/16 inch blade of carbon V steel. It is one tough mother and will hold an edge that will not only shave, but will put a rug burn on your forearm! It can be had for around the $100 - 120 range.
I have never had a problem with rust or corrosion on a carbon steel blade here in the midwest U.S. climate; they sharpen much easier than stainless and will take a sharper, finer edge, IMO.
If I were headed to Panama or a similar climate, I might opt for Chris Reeves' Green Beret knife - it is made of his own blend of steel called "crucible steel" which is a type of stainless; if I were going to take a carbon steel blade to the subtropics or tropics, I'd take a small tin of thick grease (not oil, it's too thin) and keep a thin coat of it on the blade to ward off corrosion and not worry about it.

I've got a bunch of knives and my favorite fixed is the Finnish Puukko. Had it for over 50 years and will leave it in the camp so I don't lose it before I hand it over to my son. This deer season I will carry a"Bark River Knife and Tool" with a nice thick 3-inch blade that kinda looks like a "Loveless". My folding pocket knife is usually an old stainless GI, the one with "US" on the handle and a screwdriver/can-opener, awl and lanyard ring.

I don't carry a knife all that often, but when I do, one of these goes with me.
Also a big fan of CRKT designs-among others, I have an M16-12, Lightfoot Urban Shark LUS-02, and a Crawford Kasper medium folder, plain blade. Hoping to get an M21 shortly; I really like the feel and balance of the aluminum handles.
CRKT's are really good knives for a fair price-I like to see what's new in their line, because their designs are so innovative and varied.
To answer the question, what I have works for me and I have selected it carefully. That's not to say I would never consider something else, but right now, I'm very satisfied with my choices.

For me it depends on where and what I'm doing; in town I generally carry the swiss explorer, in a bad area Gerber exchange a blade folder, in the woods I really like Chris Reeves fixed blade survival knife(Hollow handle for storage, but not the "rat tail" tang design, its one solid 12 inch hunk of steel).
Now if you like throwers in my opinion there are only two choices; Case XXX 11', or Gil Hibbens 11' throwers. (I think they've been discontinued but they pop up on gunbroker from time to time.)
Double-edged Gerber mark III, I believe its called, hands down, if you can afford it. (I've seen them in the 400.00 price range and up.) SOG makes a decent version though for about 90.00.
All around favorite but illegal to carry in CA. and several other states, yet not illegal to own (As long as it stays at home.) is my Pacific Cutlery Balisong or butterfly. Pacific Cut. changed its name to Benchmark several years back, but they still make good quality blades.
I think I probably like knives as much if not more than firearms.

My little 3 blade Kbar is enough for most of my needs. Razor sharp and the longest blade is 2.5 inches. Not big enough to reach a person's hollow spot, but will sure make for hurt and blood.
When I need a fixed blade, I keep picking up my old Marine Corps Kbar fighting knife. It is really too big for most stuff, but it has served its purpose for over 50 years. (Hunting buddies accuse me of carrying a sword) :D

Gotta love my Victorinox, its been working in the engine compartment of my boat for 3 years and not a scratch. A little oil here and there and its good to go for 3 months nonstop. The only thing I'd trust more, is a fixed boot knife, trying to find one myself.

For Combat I have an Emerson Commander and for survival I was lucky to find a Wilkinson Dartmoor... current issue to the SAS. Vey well designed survival knife.

I have a new favorite... a prototype i made a few months ago. So far it is working better than any folding knife i have ever used. There is really nothing else like it. Even the ambidextrious lock is better than any i have used. SUPER strong, and so far it hasn't even begun to "fail". The blade, S30v, not too thick, not too thin, has a totally unique grind and cuts and stabs like a dream. The blade is a bit long, though, for the average state law, 4.75", but, it really isn't too long in use. The shape works for virtually every task i have put it to yet. The ergonomics of the handle are such that any way i hold it or use it it's comfortable. Totally ambidextrious, the handle is 5.9" long, .10" thick grade 5 titanium, and because of the shape and placement of traction grooves it doesn't slip in the hand. Super easy to open and close with one hand. Super easy to sharpen, clean, and maintain. The pocket clip, which can go on either end, either side, allows the knife to ride deep in the pocket, but comfortably. Overall length is 10.6", extremely well balanced, has tremendous cutting power, and is not for the squeeemish. Weight is 5.5 ounces. This is the first in a whole line of knives being produced, and there will be smaller ones, and variations, all based upon this same design. Of course, i HAD to make the big one first! :D
Stay tuned.......

Hi,
Just got a Wilkinson Dartmoor survival! Found a new one for only $160 on the bay.
GREAT survival knife. Very well built, good design and will handle anything I throw at it. Built like a tank and holds an edge like crazy.
If you are looking for a great survival design this beats the hell out of a Buck 184 or the big Gerbers... Now a Randal or Reeves might be a different story....

I'm pretty new to the knife carry thing. I'm getting use to it now. I rarley leave home with out my pocket knife. I just up graded to a Kershaw Tactical Blur. Real nice knife. I love the assisted opening. Havn't cut much with it yet but it seems just fine so far.

I must have at least a dozen folders, ranging from 2" to 5". Benchmade, Case, some cheaper ones that I use for opening cardboard boxes and envelopes, a couple of Italian-made stilettos, including one with a damascus blade just because I like them. The only fixed blade I have (other than the chef's knives I the kitchen) is the good old Ka-Bar US Marine knife. Everybody needs one of those, AFAIC.

While I have several knives in my top drawer that I love to fondle and admire, the one I take out the door every day is my Kershaw K.O. Scallion. I have a 30 yr. old Buck 110 that is as solid as the day I bought it, but I have no reason to carry it. Shame.... :(

Swiss Army. However, I know the Leatherman has superior steel & tools on it. One very practical knife is the old Boy Scout with the fork & spoon on it. :p

My Kershaw Cyclone has been great. It holds an edge, and the assisted opening works every time. The thumb stud on the back of the blade makes a perfect bottle opener too.
One of my workers forgot his utility knife a few weeks back, so I gave him my Kerhsaw for the day. I forgot he had it, and it was returned yesterday...filthy. He and his crew liked it more than their utility knives, so they used it to cut about 600 feet of ashpalt-backed copper flashings. It's caked in so much asphalt that it won't close, but is still sharp enough for utility purposes.
I'll try to get pics up later.

Just starting to get into the whole SD carry thing (guns/knives) but I've had a pocket knife of some sort in my pocket for at least the last 15 years.
For the last several its been a 'Leatherman Wave'. One handed opener on two blades and enough in the way of tools to save me a walk to the shop.
Probably not much for SD, but better than nothing. I remember the days I would take a pocket tool right through airline security without a second glance (pre 09/11/2001).
I also do woodworking, and I really enjoy taking a day every now and then to put a good sharp edge on all the kitchen knives, pocket knives, and shop blades (chisels and planes). Kind of a zen thing.
