View Full Version : Rust on frame under grips?

Hi Guys,
I recently removed the Hogue grips (not slip-on) from my SW 4506, and I was surprised to see a spot of rusting area on the frame. There was no such rust when I originally replaced the orig. plastic grips with Hogues around 2 years ago. The gun is dry and clean.

Have you experienced anything similar to this? Wondering if those rubber grips may attract moisture. (or prevent moisture from escaping)

I use Hogues on many of my semi-autos, and rethinking their use if this is the case.

Thanks in advance.

Well, it's not so much that they attract moisture (in your case, probably sweat), as that they retain it long enough for it to do harm.

Many folks don't seem to be aware of this - it's very common to find rust when removing the rubber grips from a used gun. The solution is for the owner to take the grips off periodically (I try to do it every time I clean the gun - this might be more than is needed for your somewhat-difficult-to-remove grips on your fairly-unlikely-to-rust 4506), and clean and oil the metal under the grips. Not a big deal.

To get the rust off with minimal damage to your gun's finish, btw, take some superfine steel wool, impregnate it with oil, and gently kiss the surface of your gun, rubbing in a circle, until the rust is gone.

Agree with Erich -
Folks need to check under grips and Stocks often. 0000 steel wool with oil will remove.

I use RIG to protect internals and externals - includes under Wood Stocks.

Folks using rubber grips can do same - never heard of a problem with RIG under rubber - another choice would be TW25B .
