I have, given the barrel-length of this particular handgun, found that all the lasersights I have tested have fallen short of aesthetic requirements. The look I am going for is that which you will often get with a lasersight-fitted Glock 19, i.e. a sort of rectangular appearance.

Like so:

This is how a 17 will normally look:

So, anyone have any suggestions?

I forget the name of the company, but there is a laser that takes the place of the guide rod. You turn it on or off with the takedown latch. A wider latch is included with the kit. Installation is pretty easy.
There is an article on laser sights in this month's issue of Shooting Times. I don't have it here or I would look up the name of the company.

I think you are referring to Lasermax:

Yes, I considered purchasing one of those, but I really feel that I have to find a lasersight that, to put it bluntly, makes the gun look imposing - you know, the kind of "fake" look that guns in sci-fi movies tend to sport.

I bet I've stumped you right and proper, haven't I?

An excellent laser, which replaces the INTERNAL recoil spring inside, leaving your accessory rail free and will be more compatible with many non-custom holsters.

I love my LaserMax, very cool, not to mention it has no impact on aesthetics.

Yes, I'm sure the Lasermax is very neat, but what I want is an almost unnecessarily bulky laser sight, giving the look exemplified in picture number one, and seeing as I only have a second generation, having the accessory rail free is kind of a moot point. Nontheless you have given me an idea for a second thread.

How about one of these? (http://www.crimsontrace.com/gls630.html)

Ok, you have to send them the gun to have it fitted, but it's a little bit more like the chunkyness you want.

Well you could just get the lasermax and then duct tape an inert grenade to the front of the gun. That would look plenty imposing.
