View Full Version : Why isn't there a barrel clamp with Picatinny rails?

I'm just wondering, Surefire makes a complete forend for pump guns w/ 3 picatinny rails. How come no one has come up with barrel clamp (for magazine extensions, or without) with picatinny rails on both sides?
I'd attach my crude drawings but I made them in PowerPoint and I can't attach them. I did send them to Surefire, though.
Guess I'll have to stop by the local machine shop and make some...

i'll send you the drawings. they're in PowerPoint. Oh, and I won't be able to "stop by the local machine shop" until I get back from Iraq in October. I drew "plans" with a rail on each side, but putting one on the bottom is easy. Essentially I drew a 1" diameter 2-4" long tube for the magainze extension to slide into, with a "welded" spacer bar to cover the gap between the mag extension and the barrel (about a 1/4" in most cases) running the length of the bottom tube, on top of that, there is a 1/2" diameter 2-4" long "half pipe" with the picatinny rails on the left and right. i made the top half of the clamp two pieces so the clamp slides onto the mag extension, and under the barrel. the top tube is 1" in diameter, with 1/16" shims provided to fit the barrel as tight as possible. it screws into the bottom half with 4-6 screws (depending on wether i make the whole thing 2" or 4" long) with the mating surface behind the picatinny rails. the rails would stick out from the barrel about a 1/2" on both sides. if you put the rails on the magazine extension, they're closer to the center line of the gun, since you don't have the screws behind the rails. this also puts the rails (and subsequent attachments) inline with the forend. if you want the "plans" i'll email them to you.

That's the new 870 MCS or Modular Combat Shotgun. I have no idea as to it's availability for every day citizens. The full kit comes with one receiver an 18, 14, and 10" barrel. Along with a stock and a pistol grip and a mounting bracket for use as an entry weapon mounted under an M4. Obviously the complete kit would be Class III but you might be able to purchase the 18" configuration. Remington Military doesn't list prices but does have a phone number listed for price quotes.

You mean something like this?

We've been playing with these for about a year now. Haven't been sure until recently whether there was much demand for something like this. We aren't crazy about stuff that requires a tool to remove the barrel, but plenty of folks (including police departments) are expressing real interest.

Maybe we'll have them out early next quarter.

We might make the barrel clamp for the Mossberg. Mossbergs (usually) don't have magazine extensions so they don't need magazine clamps.
The requirement at this time is coming from law enforcement, almost all of which (in the US) are using Remingtons.
We make a number of other products for the Winchester. No one buys them. We won't be doing any more for this platform.

Mesa Tactical, that is EXACTLY what i'm looking for. I know that many people put a magazine extension on their home defense shotguns aftermarket. the problem is, as is evidenced on the Firing Line on another one of my posts, NO ONE makes a good aftermarket barrel clamp, let alone one that is useful.
Where can i get the clamp in the top photo? When can I get it, and, not that it matters, how much? I want one, I want one, I want one!!!!!
Excellet job! Please make them, please!:D :D :D :D

Yes, it's true, Mossberg does not need a barrel clamp. what it DOES need, is a place to mount a light, and possibly, a sling attachment.
the only choices for a light mount, seem to be, the cheap looking "clamp" mount, or the SureFire fore end ($230).
the sling stud (Mossberg 590) is at the end of the magazine. flush with the muzzle. doesn't make much sense to me.
BTW, i also own a Remy 870 X-Press. love it.

Remington is "jumping through the hoops" right now to get the barrel clamp with the built in picatinny rails available to the public. Hopefully it'll be out this year!:D :D :D :D

Very Nice, Mesa.... :)
What the heck - why did the Win 1200/1300 lose out so badly over the last 10 years or so - are they that much worse than the 870? What's the deal?

I've been making and selling these since last year. A new batch will be available in 2 weeks. Retail on these is $35 but have been giving deals to forum members for $24.95 plus shipping. We make all our own products here in the USA so don't let the price fool you. They are all 6061 aluminum with a black oxide finish. You can also change out the rails for other rails (shorter/longer or for other accessories) Below is shown the 870 model. Last to show is the Mossberg 590 model. We will also be making them for Benelli models and Winchester 1300's very shortly. Check out my web site (under construction) at www.candewman.com for more details or email me directly at candewman@candewman.com

I've been playing around with the sling mount idea using some Uncle Mikes QD push buttons. No plans as of yet. There are companies that make sling mounts that attach to picatinny rails though, GG&G being one of them.
I didn't mention it before, but these are custom made to the specific shotgun. Most clamps are a general mount, in other words, one size fits all. All shotguns are not the same in dimension so my clamps are made to the specific shotgun. Here's another couple of pics of the setup with a short rail on one side and a long rail on the other. It comes with 2 6 slot rails.
By the way, if you do use a clamp like this and you have a ported barrel, DON'T mount your light/laser/whathaveyou with the thumbscrews up if you mount it over the ports! I don't need to tell you why, right?

I have a bolt-action 12guage by Harrington And Richardson (original CT company). I have about given up trying to mount a red dot BSA (the $30 with integrated weaver clamp), or shot scope to it.
I ordered some "universal 1" long barrel clamps" from Ebay which would work in idea, but could not expand enough to fit on the barrel and the screws touched the barrel so it could not fit. If you have a 20g, I'll send them to you for $10 in TX.
There needs to be an impregnated plastic version of a smooth 4" long barrel clamp with molded picatinney rail.

Nordic Components has offed a mag tube clamp has a place to add rails and a sling stud. They sale the clamp with or without the rails. Brownells carries them.

This is a better design than what's out there right now. Lighter, more versatile. You have a choice of 2 rails and you don't have to remove the rail to remove the clamp like you do on other types. The longer rail can actually be set back above the forearm. One screw holds it together. It's smaller, lighter and more simple in the design. These start at under $30.

They do look well made. How does the sling swivel attached? It looks like a quick detach sling swivel.
I will suggest then to my customers. You should do a post @ Shotgun World Tactical shotgun section. They won't mind if you do. I will start the thread and you can add to it.
