View Full Version : Enfield .303 Scope

I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a scope for an Enfield .303. I talked with a guy at the local sporting goods tore and he told me I should have to pay at least $200 for the scope because a gun like that will destroy ones that are not at least that quality. Does anyone have any experiences with scopes below the $100 price breaking and being of a poor quality on a gun of this caliber? Thanks for your comments.

The problem with cheap scopes on an Enfield is that they could lose zero under the .303 recoil. I used a cheapo Simmons on one for a while and it just wasn't up to the task. It now sits on my Model 60 squirrel gun where it does just fine.
Make sure you do your homework on the mount as well. They can be a pain in the rear end to install.

I have a no4 mkI enfield (see before and after pics) and it has a tasco pronghorn 4X32 (upgrading soon). I have had no problems with losing zero. Also I have a side mount (reciever needs to be drilled and tapped type) scope mount I got from brownells years ago, but ATI (same ones that made my stock) make a no gunsmithing mount.

The scope is great and can be picked up in different confingurations (3-9X40, etc.) for dirt cheap since they discountinued the line (check ebay for some new discontinued stock under 40 bucks).

After: nice sporter! reparked, new spring for bolt, new ATI stock (from brownells), barrel shortened to carbine length, fiber optic sight installed on front blade sight.

Avoid the cheap-o "no-drill" scope mounts for a Lee-Enfield. I had one a few years ago. .303 recoil has little mercy on such a mount. A few dozen shots into a range session, the mount and scope popped off, striking me in the forehead and denting the rim of the objective lens.

I'm sure it was dented on my skull, not the ground. ;)
