View Full Version : Surefire X200 A or X200 B on a Mossberg 500?

Despite understanding that a Surefire forend is a cool thing to have, I have decided to go a different route. First off, the Mossberg 500 version has been unavailable from Surefire, and according to them, won't be available until at least the end of May. Second, I use a Knoxx SpecOps stock, and don't want to have to be too focused on hand placement on the forend to avoid hand smacking badness. Finally, I like the longevity and durability of the LED based X200 series.

So...from Surefire's site:

"While the A model is designed to produce a tighter beam for identification of longer range threats, the wider beam of the B model is better for peripheral threat identification."

There is no other info to elaborate. For a home defense situation, is the more-focused, longer projecting beam of the A preferable or not to the wider beam of the B? For some reason the B version is $25 more, although that is not an important factor.

Anyone have any advice or, even better, experience with either of these lights?

If for home use the B will be the better choice. In my opinion it is going to light up rooms better with the wide beam.

Having played with both at close range in the dark it's hard to tell, at longer range the A seemed to get out there a little better but again if you did a blind (no pun intended) test to identify one from the other I question if most people could with any degree of accuaracy.

It's somewhat similer to the M4 light i had that could have bulbs from something like 225 up to 400 or 500 lumnes, well we had 3 diffirent bulbs and could not really tell them apart except for very long range... after you exceed dang bright it becomes a little irrelevent though with the m4 we chose to save battery juice and use the low end bulb

I have seen both in action and here is the deal:

the A is a LuxIII LED, 3 watt, using a TIR optics that collects the light and cast a tight beam with no side spill. THe B is a 5 watt LuxV putting out more light but in a more scattered fashion with a reflector.

For HD you want to light up the whole area in front of ya, there fore the B is more appropriate. The A is better for distances longer than 20 yards. In the house the beam would be too narrow to be able to effective in lighting up the whole room.

Hope this helps.
