I went out shooting with some friends of mine a couple of days ago. We all brought a myriad of weapons, including our shotguns. We started tossing some skeet and I laid down my 870 20 ga., and got my old Savage .410 that my grandfather gave me. I started knocking down clays with it, and some friend of a friend ex-Marine showed up.

He asked me if he could see my shotgun so naturally being nice I checked it, and let him take a hands on look. It's a beautiful gun. My grandfather bought it a LONG time ago and gave it to me a few years ago. I'm extremely close to him, so naturally it means the world to me.

This dude wants to shoot it, so once again i said fine, and after putting a shell in and slamming it together, he makes some "tacticool" cover moves, and slams the hammer down with the heel of his hand breaking the spur of the hammer right off. He just handed it to me and said "no wonder, look how old it is. No synthetics or anything---that's why military arms now are superior. Too bad", and left.

Does anyone at all know how to get a new hammer for this gun?

It's a single shot .410 break action, marked as follows:

WESTPOINT --Savage Arms-- Mod. 949C Series P, 3" chamber.

If I was in your situation, I would have taken my 870 at that moment and slammed the butt through his face. It would be one thing if he was sorry about it, but that was just stupid. I am really sorry something like that could even happen. How did everyone else react?

That sucks.

I was just up hunting and a friend of a friend showed up and kept asking to see my O/U. I let him see it and I didn't think he was all that respectful of having someone elses gun in his hands. I couldn't wait to get it back.

I think I'm going to start being an Ahole and just treat my guns like its my Harley. In other words..Answer: "No, you can't check it out"

This guy would NOT have replaced my gun if he dropped it or swung into a tree or something.

Good luck with your fix.

Man if I did that to someones firearm I would feel rely bad and pay for the repairs and offer to do them myself or if it required a gun smith I would pay for the whole thing and still feel very bad about it but then again I dont treat firearms like that. I would have used my thumb to cock the hammer.

I would have taken my 870 at that moment and slammed the butt through his face
I would do the same thing.

Aside from my guns, I don't let my friends borrow my truck or my wife; They'll probably try to throw a rod in each.

I tell you what, if that dude disrepected a firearm like that and realized it had a setimental value like that which in my eyes is priceless,I believe I would have to find out if the corp taught him any thing in self defense, because they didn't teach him any respect!!!

I think I just realized just how angry that would have made me feel. I know, it took me awhile, but still. The fact that he dissed your gun after he broke it just bewilders me. I had no idea people in the shooting world were capable of such nonsense. Find out who he is and track him down. Then make him pay for it. It is pretty much common sense to not do any tactifool moves on someone else's gun. In fact, it is common sense to not do them at all. I have never hated an anonymous person so much before.

I don't let anyone but trusted friends or family touch my guns. It amazes me just how little ex-marines (ex-cops, sailors, rangers, ninjas, whatever) know about properly holding firearms. Then again, I wonder if any of the ex-marines I've met were actually ex-marines.

Do you have the broken piece too? you might try asking around to see if you can get it welded up. I have a guy I use who is a Aircraft certified welder who has fixed a lot of parts for me. Stuff to worn down to hold or broken stuff he can do wonders. That part is most likely case hardened and a good welder may very well be able to tig weld that on without killing the case hardening by heat sinking the rest of the part.

Try asking on the message board at www.savage24.com. Savage questions are never off topic there.

Thanks for all the help so far folks. I haven't had a chance to follow up on anything yet but will. To answer a question, I don't have the spur because it fell in high grass before I even knew it had happened. Thanks again. :)

I bet it was still functional enough to put a load of birdshot into his rear. That's probably what I would have done, and I know that's what Dick Cheney would have done.

You should have followed the example of our fine republican leadership... you could have said: "I was swinging on a rare spotted korean pheasant that flushed downrange and this doofus walked right in front of me!"

"...and some friend of a friend ex-Marine showed up."

I presume your friend is going to tell his ex-Marine "buddy" that he is no longer welcome around any of the rest of you while you're shooting (or any of the rest of time, for that matter)?

I am truly sorry for what happened to your shotgun. I hope you can get it restored quickly!

Thats a given and should be assumed.

You may try getting a hammer for a different model of shotgun, cutting the spur off and having it welded on as a replacement. I know it won't be the same but as a last resort it's better than nothing.

He just handed it to me and said "no wonder, look how old it is. No synthetics or anything---that's why military arms now are superior. Too bad", and left.

No, Military arms now are not superior, they're just more idiot proof and this animal in pants (the nicest description I can think of at the moment) is an example of why they need to be so. My friend I am furious for you, what a jerk.

This looks to me like the part you need. Next you need to find out this dweasel's name and address and send him a bill for the part and the labor of the most expensive gunsmith you can find to install it.

gotta love the cheyney comments...

Anyways, I'd try and find a new part, as a welder I would think if you had to take that option you could, 1 bevel both edges(obviously) and then 2 use a TIG welder and preferably stainless rod(not for look, I tend to thing it comes out cleaner)to fill in, hit with a die grinder, then sander, then a bit of paint or what not. I can't imagine most people would want a welded part on there though, would think it couldn't possibly be as good as an original(would think they heat treat them and what not..?) Good luck, Can't beleive someone would be that disrespectful with another persons gun, specialy around a groop of people watching, would make me refrain from anything that crazy.

Hey you can do some nice looking welds with TIG man (if you are good enough) TIG is a nice clean weld.

Value of a Savage single barrel shotgun--$100.... Value of a Savage shotgun belonging to a Grandfather.... Priceless.
I am sure you can find a replacement hammer for it. It is too bad you couldn't find the broken part as it would have made life easier. My sympathy and good luck..

I'd check e-gunparts.com like the other guys said. Those guys have everything. Man, that sucks. It's one thing to break something by accident, but not to apologize or ask to it fix it is another. Take some responsibility for your mistake. Good luck with the repair.
