I'm looking to buy either the maverick 88 or the mossberg 500, from what I've read the only difference is the trigger assembly and price. My question then, is will all the parts and accessories such as heat sheilds and pistol grips fit the maverick, because everything seems to come for the mossberg only?
Thanks in advance -Rob

Yes, I believe most accessories for the Mossberg 500 will fit the Maverick 88.

Everything should interchange between the two with the exception of the forearm. They're a little different and don't swap without some modification, from what I've read.

Some advice a friend gave me:
Get what you really want, not whats cheaper at the moment.Reason being: in the long run you'll wish you spent XX more money for what you wanted to begin with.

Everytime you look thru a catalog your hopes will get crushed when your gun is not listed or worse yet specifically excluded.

And also 88's are not pakerized.

Used parts will be cheaper for mainstrem models.

I have a maverick, I like the matte finish better, plus I picked it up for $85 at a pawn shop. Everything from a 500 fits except for foregrips and mag extensions. But barrels and stocks and scope mounts all fit fine on mine.
What mods are you planning so we can be sure it will interchange?

Here are th differences between the mossberg and maverick guns:

Mossberg is Drilled for a scope mount, the maverick is not.

The mossberg has a reciever safety, the maverick has a trigger guard one.

The mossberg has a forearm tube, that the plastic or wood foramr fits onto, on the maverick, the plastic is pinned to the action bars and can not be swapped out for another forend without getting the mossberg tube/action bars assembly.

The mossberg has a different finish. I have had no trouble with the finish on either, but my maverick's reciever does look a little purple. However, afriend of mine has a newer maverick, and his reciever is very black.

Stocks, barrels, heat shields are all perfectly interchangeable. Both are very reliable and are internally(exepting the trigger group) identical.

Get the maverick if none of the things I listed above bothers you, they are every bit as durable as their more expensive brother.

Yeah, but the side-mount scope mounts for the 500 do fit the maverick if you are wanting a scope. Mine is a b-square.

someone is offering me a 88 as payment for some work. (not sure if it the field or home version) but I was thinking about adding on a tube extender. it sounds like that is a bit of a major upgrade. is that correct?

You will not be able to extend the mag tube without MAJOR hassle. The easiest way to do it would be to buy an 8-shot mossberg persuader tube, and replace the mavericks tube with it (not easy to get that tube off by the way).

You'll also need to buy an 8-shot persuader's barrel because you will need that exact barrel to match the tube you just bought.

You will end up spending more than the gun is worth just to get 2 extra shells worth of capacity....that's dumb.

Shoot the gun enough to where you don't need 2 extra shells. I know that after 2 years of competitive shotgunning with my mossberg that my 6 shots are more than enough for just about anything.

I can hit a 4" wide, 1" tall clay disc profile flying at 45 MPH easily over 90% of the time from varying distances and angles. I can get a second shot off before the first shell is even halfway to the ground.

Moral of the story:

If you want more capacity for fun, I guarantee you'll enjoy being able to hit what you want more than being able to miss 2 more times.

If you want more capacity for HD, a single well-aimed shot is better in every way compared to 8 poor ones.

Sorry for the rant, I know you didn't need all of that, but if it helps..... I just wonder why some people feel the need to get 10 shells in their shotguns sometimes.

not a problem rugerdude. one of the reasons I am considering this is because it is cheap and would give me a platform to do some "pimping out" I believe is the current term without being out a higher end gun if I screw it up bad. (my wife has already decided on a pink cammo job for it). but at the same time I tend to avoid junk guns.

(so far, rough plan is 3 laser pointers, 2 or 3 AA and D cell maglights, the pink cammo job, pistol grip, reddot type scope, and a lot of duct tape....)

my gun pusher has already promised a place to hang it on his wall when I'm done.
