View Full Version : Choke or no choke for slugs?

I was just curious as to whether or not to use a choke (not talking about a rifles one) with slugs with my smooth bore shotgun? If so which choke would I use? I always thought to go chokeless when using slugs, but I could be wrong.

Thanks

Nerver shoot a shotgun without the choke tube(s) properly installed in the barrel. You run the risk of damaging the thread if you leave the tube(s) out. Either use cylinder CT or sometimes you can get away with a modified CT. Depends on the style of slug you are shooting.

I get best slug accuracy using a modified choke tube in my Browning A5

Best thing to do is get a few slugs, head out to the range and put them on paper. Every gun is different as is every choke tube.

Good luck and report back your findings

i was using my remington 870 with a 28 vent rib rem choked barrel. scoped because law here says you must have adjustable open iron or peep type sights or a scope if hunting with slugs much less possesing slugs. i did'nt have a smoothebore slug barrel yet. i was shooting the 1oz. 2 and 3/4 inch brennekes. with the mod tube i was getting an 8 inch group of 5 shots . i switched to the imp. cyl tube and got a 3 inch group of 5 shots. all 10 shots were at 50 yards. i think that the foster wad was being ripped from the slug with the mod. tube maybe a mossberg or a winchester will do a different grouping with the same chokes. i agree that each gun is different. i tried the same slugs when i bought a new smoothbore slug barrel. they went all over with the scope. basically a 10 inch group. without the scope a 6 inch group. i tried remington sluggers and got a tighter group.
