I have an old ted williams pump shotgun and wondered what kind of slug spread us acceptable. I have not mounted a scope yet but wanted to try open sights first.

Set up a target the size of the area you should be able to hit for a clean kill at the distance you will be shooting at. You may be surprised at the accuracy of some older shotguns.
As long as you can hit your target constantly you will be good to go.

with rifle sights? short no choke or improved cylinder barrel? or standard field gun with long heavy choked barrel/
All will affect accuracy.
Ted Williams SHOULD be a Winchester Model 1200/1300 or 1400 (If a Semi)
there a reasonable priced side-mounts for scopes and if you already have
a scope best do it. It will save a lot of frustration.
Check gunpartscorporation index for private labels, need the Sears model number.
With regular rifle sights, you should be able to place all slug into the black of the Standard 25yds RF target @ 75yds, using the Forster-style slug.
Using Brenneke -style slugs will get you 100.
Adding a scope will achieve all slug 100yds, but accuracy will be better.
