I just bought my first shotgun.
a mossberg 500 cruiser 12gauge 20" 8 shot with a pistol grip.
it's sole purpose in life is to be a HD weapon.
are there any low recoil shells that i can buy at wally world that would fill my needs?

My opinion, worth maybe $.02.
Get yourself a couple three boxes of the cheapest 1 ounce loads you can find at Wal-Mart, go out and shoot the gun. Make sure it functions properly, and that you are familiar enough with it to make it do so. After you've blown off 50 or more rounds, then get some LR Buckshot (or whatever shot load you decide on) and put a few rounds of that stuff on paper - see what it feels like and what you and the gun do with it.

I would seriously think of mounting a flash light under the barrel. You can get the mounts at your local gunstore or have them order a mount that you put one of the mini mag lites in. Might just keep you from shooting one of the kids or spot. You might want to remember that the buck shot will go through at least three walls and maybe more. Bird shot will do almost the same.

Heres a good site to visit.
http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm
It shows what several different types of buck will do. Also on the same site they have tested rifles and pistols.

I have had my 500 20 gauge "cruiser" equipped with the pistol grip and now the poly stock off juniors mav 88 (he got a wooden set) and wonder how I ever got by... I will never go back to the pistol grip...
I not only have better shot placement but overall control is many fold improved. No recoil concerns regarding second shot etc.

Amen to that Hogdogs.
Semi-auto guy-Hornady (TAP) has some low recoil buck made to reliably cycle in autos. If you want even less of a push.

Use the Ammoman link above. They have Federal Tactical in stock in 00 buck with FliteControl--- and 000 buck without.
They also have Fed Tac #4 buck if you're a fan of that stuff, and slugs.
Hornady TAP and Win. Ranger are just slightly milder, in my opinion--you can Google around for it.
I once bought a 1/2 case of Ranger slugs and they wouldn't eject properly from all 3 of my 870's. Appeared that the brass (aluminum) swelled-- causing difficult extraction. No problem with Ranger buck.
The Federal stuff is copper plated. TAP and Ranger are lead.
