Just narrowed my search for a HD shotgun that was suitable for my wife down to 2 models. Mossberg 500 Persuader 12 gauge and a Remington 870 express 12 gauge. I like them both and the price point is close to even on them. The Mossberg I found used for $219 and they are holding that for 2 days for me to let me think about it. It will either be that gun or a New Remington for $299.

I've never handled a Mossberg, but I took my new 870 Express out for the first time yesterday and fell in love.

I have both. The 870 just feels better to me. I use them both, but will more frequently reach for the 870. Spend some time cycling the action and raising the gun to your shoulder. Do it 15 or 20 times with each one and you'll know which one works best for you.

one thing that may be a deciding factor is if you like the tang safety of the mossberg, or the reciever safety on the remington. Myself being left handed I personally prefer the mossberg. I have shot many rounds out of both my mossberg, and a remington. The only thing I can say is that i like the way the mossberg feels, so I am probably biased. Like it was said before, try them and find out wich one u like.

You can always get the safety on a Remington reversed if you have a mind too.

I am a Remington man myself. I just bought myself a new 870 the other day for home defense. It has an 18" barrel and has the folding stock with a pistol grip also.
I noticed that you said you bought it for your wife. Can she handle a 12 gauge alright? If not you may want to get her a 20ga. instead.

I prefer the Mossberg. Significantly lighter (alloy receiver) and the safety and action bar release are much better imo.

That being said, the Remmies last forever. You really won't go wrong with it or almost any decent pump shotgun.

I own a Remington 870 Wingmaster, and used to have an 870 Express. I wasn't so impressed with the finish on the Express (matte blue.. but it feels almost chalky). I got rid of it for whatever reason.
My father in law owns an older Mossberg, the blueing and furniture aren't as fancy as the Remington's, but really they do the exact same job. Comparing a Persuader to the Express though, I'd take the Persuader. Just my .02

If you decide on the 870 Express get the one that comes with the factory tube ext. It usually only cost about $30 more It doesn't have the mag tube dimples and it has the detent ball on the bbl lug. The factory tube ext kit: long spring, tube ext and clamp is worth about $80 if you decide to sale it. The 870 Express model 25077 has the longer forend and is more suited for a girl with short arms.

Here is a pic of one. 870 Express model # 25077 18.5" bbl. I replace the factory tube ext with one of my (7+1) +3 tube extensions I offer. You can see the forend is well suited for short or long arms.

Either will do the job, I prefer the 870.

94bluerat and woohog1 are on the right track.

Put them both to your shoulder a bunch of times. See which safety you like better. See which slide release you like better. See which one fits and feels better, and get that one.

Since the shotgun must be suitable for your wife, perhaps it would also be a good idea to see if she prefers one.

I spent $600 on this, my second 870. I've never handled a mossy but I love this so much I dont care for anything else.

I have a Mossy pictured below. and my buddy has a 870, there both great, I bought my Mossberg at a big-5 259 with both a 18in and a 28in barrel. check out big-5 if they exist in your area, I bought based on the position of the safety and price (price mattered more):o.

This. She's the one that needs to shoulder it and work with the ergonomics.
You can't go wrong with either one.

I'm quite partial to the 12 ga. Remington 870 HD w/ 18" barrel and factory tube extension with synthetic stock. Solid, reliable and just plain works.

The fact that remington makes you modify the weapon to add to the magazine capacity turned me off to them. I have an 870 and had to drill the dimples. The controls on the Mossberg are less cumbersome. The safety on the 870 requires you to remove your finger from the trigger to disengage it.

the trigger gaurd and safety are plastic on the 870. for a few more dollars you can get the mil-spec mossy and those parts will be metal.

The Express 870 has a metal safety and a high impact plastic guard. The safety can be replaced with a oversize Vang safety for $12. You don't have to removed finger from the trigger with a Vang 870 tactical safety.

Like I said above the Express models that come with the factory mag tube extension don't have dimples that need to be drilled out. They also have the detent ball setup on the barrel lug.

The 590A1 with the metal guard and safety is a great shotgun but very heavy.

In the last month I have personally fixed four mossbergs where the ring that holds the action bars to the forestock has lost the spot welds, Never had to fix a 870.....

I have owned a few 500's and still have one but love the 870.

I dont understand how someone can say.... "never shot the other one, so you should choose the one that I have shot" or "I grew up with one, so thats the way to go" Why would someone say this, as trying to guide someone to make a decision. I have shot many many rounds through the mossberg 870 pump, and then chose to switch to mossy. It felt better to me, and the tang safety was in a better place to me.
Please guys, if you are just going on nothing but sheer opinion, put a disclaimer in your post, saying something to the effect of, I have never shot the other weapon, but having only shot or grew up with , or like this one better, or whatever your untried experience.
I think that will save much wasted time, and wasted space.

The Benelli Nova is another smooth operating, reliable pump shotgun that can be had for about the same money.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but for the price difference, I'd go with the new Remington.
