Take digital photos of your shotgun and post them within this thread so we can see it.
Include shots of the underside of the receiver where Mossberg typically indicates which model it is.
A true 590A1 will typically have a parkerized finish and also be imprinted with a "590A1" on the left side of the receiver.
When you say a "5 shot", are you referring to its magazine tube capacity only? With the magazine at full capacity, could there still be a round chambered, meaning it's a 5+1, which is typical for an 18.5" Mossberg? I ask, because many times a 5+1 would be referred to as a 6-shot gun.
Mossberg's model numbering can be difficult and doesn't seem to have much logic at first glance.http://www.neospeed.org/images/mberg590a1lftside.jpg

It is a 500 Persuader with a Cruiser pistol grip. The reason is because it has a closed seal mag tube and can't accept a tube extension. The 590 models have a open mag tube with mag cap that screws on the end like a 870 shotgun. The Mossberg 500 breacher & the 835 also have a open mag tube.
You've got a 500 Persuader, enjoy it but put a standard stock on it with maybe a shorter length of pull, around 13".

If you unscrew the cap you will see that it has a screw on it and the mag tube ends under the bbl lug and it is a sealed tube. Look it over you will see what I am talking about.
The 590 mag tube goes through the bbl locking lug and the tube is threaded. The cap screws onto the tube. The tube is opened and you can take out the springs & follower. That is not the case with your Persuader. You would have to unscrew the whole mag from the receiver to change out the spring & follower. That is a good shotgun you have so enjoy it.

Another thing to look at is the trigger group. On the 590/590a1 it'll be metal, on the standard 500's it'll be plastic.

The 590A1 the TG and safety is metal. The standard 590 and 500 they are plastic.

Looks like a 590 (pic seems to show that) but not an A-1 as already said. I am always learnin' new stuff.... I thought all 590's were set up with the mag tube cap rather than bolt.

The only 590 that is available with a 18.5" and 5+1 capacity is a 590A1, 500 Breacher & 500 MilsGun. He has a 500 Persuader.

This image seems to show *5 9 0* but I may be wrong.
Plus it doesn't have a black pin in the trigger group...

That may be a 590 receiver, but it's not a 590 shotgun. Different mag tube.
The 590 has a male threaded magazine tube and female threaded cap (serves as a bayonet lug). The 500 reverses this.
You've got a 500 defender or cruiser there.
Also for future reference a 590A1 comes only with a heavy barrel (no heat shield) and metal safety/ trigger housing. It will also clearly say "590A1" on the bottom of the receiver.
I've never seen one without ghost ring sights, but I can't swear one doesn't exist.

it has a plastic trigger guard, and plastic safety, I think the trigger itself is metal.

NO.
In most jurisdictions (In the US anyway) you'd be hardpressed to explain shooting someone with "less lethal" ammo. A shotgun is lethal force no matter how it's loaded. If you use "less lethal" ammo that may in itself call into question your decision to shoot. Basically it could indicate to a jury that maybe you weren't really afraid enough for your life to justify shooting.
Basically if the situation warrants gun-fire it warrants real gun-fire, not almost, kinda sorta, but not really gun-fire.

^ agreed. There is no such thing as "less than lethal" ammo. If you point that thing at someone and pull the trigger, it is deadly force. No allowance for what comes out of it. If you felt the need to employ deadly force, it is generally only permissible in response to deadly force.
IOW, if you ever need to shoot someone (God forbid) you will not get any legal breaks for shooting them with less-than-lethal ammo. Just do what you gotta do to stop them. I recommend #4 buck :D
