This is just mainly to plink around with, in the price range <$200. All I have is rifles at this moment in time and that rifle ammo is getting pretty expensive. ;)
Thanks for any help.

Nothing wrong with a good ol' single barrel Savage or H&R. It will last a lifetime of abuse and keep working. Plus their fun to shoot with the hammer versions.

I reload every thing I shoot except .22-rimfire, so it's been a while since I bought any fresh ammo. Yikes! You're right about the prices, rifle ammo has skyrocketed. Shot shells have gone up, too. Instead of a cheap shotgun, have you considered plinking with .22-RF or reloading?

I already have a 22lr. I just feel the shotgun itch that needs to be scratched if you know what I mean. :D

Yep, I know what you mean. I've got way more handguns than shotguns, but the scatter guns are the best for scratching.

Used remington 870.... I have yet to handle an inexpensive single shot that pointed decent.... A used 870 express can be had for around $200 in good shape.... If I had to hunt birds with a single shot I wouldn't go.....

Anyone know about the norinco ultra 87?

The Norinco 982 is the best deal going in a Tactical shotgun. It comes with a nice set of GRS for about $200.

Or this one? Does this one have a rifled barrel? I read the specs and it didn't say.

+1 on the Maverick. I saw one set up just that way at Academy Sports last week for $157.95.

And Mavericks are very good guns. I've had one for years as a truck gun and it's been a great shotgun.

If it's strictly for HD, then +1 on the Pardner Protector/Norinco 982. The one I handled and shot (Pardner) impressed me. In fact, I recently bought one and gave it to my brother. Paid a little over $200 OTD.

Look at single shot H&R Pardner. Nothing fancy, but a single shot will serve you well enough and in my experience they are well made.

The one you ask of is a smooth barrel. If it were rifled it would not have the interchangeable choke tube mentioned in the specs... plus field gun means smooth for the most part. It will be called a slug barrel or deer barrel usually if it is rifled.
For being an import gun they cost more than the american made mossberg or maverick.

I recently bought a Western Auto/Revelation 12 gauge for $150 at a pawn shop

my guess is it was actually made by Mossberg

and for the same price I bought a Winchester Ranger 120 12 gauge (28 inch modified barrel)

+ 1 to used Remmys.

I am not sure about the 870 commie rip offs- they havent been around enough to be 100% sure of reliability or safety come to that.

If you get the NEF($175-$200) with the SB II frame you can have a rifle bbl made for it also (like the contenders do). The only down side is you have to send the frame to them for them to mate it to the bbl. On the plus side the last time I checked it only cost around a 100.00 bucks to have this done. They have several different calibres to choose from. I got a 20 gauge,.243, and.22, .270 bbl for mine so far and have money left over for ammo, Just a thought.

Take the advice offered and hit the pawn shops, gun shows, classifieds....there's a deal out there with your name on it! I picked up a Mini-14 at a garage sale for $35. Network. Tell everybody that you know what you're looking for and if somebody's Uncle has a Mod. 12 Win. in the back of his closet DON'T turn it down.

Lots of great deals at the last gunshow, used pump scatterguns abound . I am not a fan of the nok-off China trade, sorry folks. Check out used Mossberg 500s and used Remington 870s, if you are not too picky you will find what you are looking for.
