I was at Gander Mtn a coupe days ago like i usually am, and ventured into the shotgun area to browse around ( i have been pondering a shotgun as my next purchase, mainly for HD). While there i ran into a Remington 870 express, 18"bbl, extended tube ( i assume 8 shell capacity), matte black finish for $375. is that a decent price?? they also had an 870 epxress SP, Marine something edition, but was about $700 and did not look like it was worth the money. is $375 a good buy or not?
looks like this:

If it's new thats a great price. The 870 is an excellent shotgun.

I think BudsGunShop has that shotgun for $315 or so on special now. With the transfer fee I would say that IS a GOOD BUY at that price.

MSRP on an Express Synthetic 7 shot with standard stock was 330. last time I checked, last winter. Sounds like GM pricing. Sure it wasn't a blackened Marine Magnum?
Good gun though (butter smooth action, nice balance, as-is IMO a perfect HD weapon; The film Way of the Gun features extensive, realistic action scenes with this model, FWIW) even at 50. more than the maker says it is worth, I'd try to get it cheaper elsewhere however. GM has decent Benelli prices though, but forget cooperation with ordering a configuration not in stock, at least around here.
Price could have gone up since I checked but if not, hell with anyone charging more than retail (and we're not talking scalping a LCP to save months of waiting) let alone by that much. Their Taurus 1911's also go for 100. more than local shops identical model. Ridiculous.

for those who have bought one recently, what did you pay?

i paid 239 for a normal express. i would say coming from gander mountain i would pay a little more just for the extra services that are included.
but on the other hand, if you can find it cheaper might as well buy it. it is a 870 after all, its going to outlast that extra warranty by years.

330. and not a cent more, tops (definately no more than that amount plus sales tax) to take her home. It will probably be cheaper if your guy's a home FFL

...$350. or so for my 870 seven round H.D. model at a local gun store, Academy, a sporting goods chain in the area wanted as I recall, $379. for it. Academy has the Mossberg Persuader that I'm going to get, for $269. but on the Academy website (academy.com) it's posted as $259. as I recall. Unsure if the Wal Mart has the Persuader or not nor it's price (shotguns aren't listed on the Wal Mart website), but Academy is only a few blocks away so I'll pay the $269. for it there, waiting to see if some sort of fall season sale occurs, probably not.
BTW, I think I'm going to prefer the mossberg over the remington, having not fired either one yet, just prefer the mag slide release on the mossy, it's everything to me, it's location, for defense, nothing to fiddle with in an awkward position as the remington's is, to me anyway-no switching of hands, no reaching around trying to find it/employ it. To each his own, choice has nothing to do with price or longevity of the two models, as it turns out I will shortly own both models as I have the remington already.
The mossberg Persuader I looked at BTW recently, had a slightly different safety, inset into a groove on the receiver, not the add on on top piece of junk on the ones I looked at months back that turned me off to Mossys and aided in my choice of Remington then.

I just passed up a 870 Ex used for $150 in great shape. I say you could find one closer to $200.

I paid $247 for a new Express with a 28" barrel. I like the longer length but I've thought about getting a shorter barrel as a HD barrel.
Best add-on I've found for my 870 is a laser that screws on where the tube cap does. It's zeroed perfectly after completely screwing it on. It's amazing how they got it so accurate. It costs me a round of capacity but IMO it's worth it in certain situations. There's nothing like that feeling that you can't miss. I wish it had a momentary on/off switch but for night time varmit control it's impossible to beat IMO. You put that dot on something and it's shot. How can that be a bad thing? I found it on this web site (http://catalog.dkgtrading.com/) under optics then lasers. I hope to adapt a momentary switch to it someday. Hopefully I can find the right switch to do it.

FWIW , I have the Marine Magnum , which IMO is a fantastic pump with the added bonus of a tough , virtually weatherproof finish. It's never failed me in any way whatsoever.
I paid $525 for it NIB.
Worth every penny.
