Hi,

Let me start off by thanking thefiringline for the happy birthday email today. I have a Mossberg 930SPX that I would like to tweak a little. Does anybody have experience with the Vang Comp VCS on a semi? If so what kind of improvement should I expect? I am also considering Magnaport but I heard the Vang Comp system is better; please correct me if i'm wrong. My goal is less recoil/muzzle jump and better patterns. I also have an 870 that I would like to put an Armor Tuff finish on (along with the SPX) . Wilson combat told me that I would have to send the gun completely taken down for them to AT a mossberg. I would rather not do this, I feel if I am paying for the service a pro should do the whole thing including taking down and assembly. Do any of you know of a company that offers a similar product as Armor-Tuff and will work on mossbergs? Thanks for all of your time, I hope you guys can point me in the right direction. BTW, the SPX is my first semi. I like it a lot, but it kicks harder than other semi's I have shot(hence the porting).

Thanks Guys,

-Pete

IMHO and utilitarian lifestyle I would buy a long choke that is already ported and screw it in the barrel and be done with that...
As for the finish I would buy duck boat paint and do a redneck camo job... baking the metal parts at 175 for a few hours. One reason i love Mossbergs is they are JUST a Mossberg so if it looks like chit it is likely just a different color of chit if you ask those that shoot the nice guns...:D

Felt recoil has a lot to do with proper fit....

If you have one of the guns that "doesn't kick as much" lay the 930 next to it and use the stock shims that come with the 930 to match up the dimensions of the two stocks...

The stocks on the 930's are very customizable as far as drop and cast go...

The best way to get better patterns would be to have the barrel fitted for chokes, most gunsmiths will do this for $60 - $80, plus a choke tube...

As far as porting and lengthening the forcing cone..... any difference in recoil will be perceived rather than measurable....

Thanks for the info guys, I am guessing that it is porting/forcing cone job or a ported choke tube, It sounds like can't have both. Would it even be worth it for both?

If I go with chokes what brand would you guys use? I would not mind an extended choke that acts like a muzzle brake.

I am assuming I need to have the gunsmith thread the inside of the barrel for a specific brand (I am new to chokes, all my shotguns are cylinder bore). Do you guys think the new Rem Chokes that have the toothy muzzle brake/standoff at the end work well? Also thank you for the advise on fitting, my gun came with a wide variety of spacers I did not know that they could make a difference in shot recovery, I thought they were for lining up with the sights. I received a gift card for a local sporting goods shop for my birthday from my girl, they carry just about every recoil pad out there including the Remington SuperCell. What would you put on your own 12gauge if you were in the market for a recoil pad? Thanks again for the advice guys, I am very happy I went with this gun and can't wait to start tweaking it.

Thanks everybody,

-Pete
