ive got a 590 mariner, couple weeks old, never fired. bought new by me. first time i loaded it the mag spring got twisted and bound up in the tube. i freed it from the front with a rod, and it just bound again when i reloaded it. follower is fine, it slides perfectly. i figured it was just a spring, **** happens. mossberg customer service sent me a new one no questions (after them not replying to an email for over a week, and then waiting on the phone for over an hour!).

new spring, SAME problem! once you get over 5 or 6 shells in it, the spring binds up and wont return.

is this a common problem with these things?

i know i can send it back, but id hate to pay shipping, FFL fee, etc if theres just a better aftermarket spring i can order. i think the problem is that the spring is tapered on either end and is narrower than the mag tube, and that give it room to twist and bind.

thoughts?

Give me an Email. The Wolff extra power springs work well in the 590. I buy them in bulk.

I will send you one for the cost of shipping $3. I will size it for you so it will be ready to go.

FWIW, Mossbergs in general seem to have more magazine spring issues than other shotguns. If you own any other Mossberg shotguns, now might be a good time to preemptively replace the magazine springs with Wolff ones.

I am a new member and hate for my first post to be one for a month old post....but I did a search and this thread is what applied.

I did have this same issue with my magazine spring as the OP had. I also replaced mine with the Wolff XP spring. That all worked well.

My concern is that the M590A1 with the 20" barrel is rated at 8 rounds in the magazine plus one in the chamber with 2 3/4" shells. With the Wolff spring, I can only fit 7 in the magazine. When I cut the spring short enough to fit all 8 in the magazine, it won't reliably feed the 8th round. When I leave the spring longer and only fit 7 in the magazine, then it reliably feeds all 7 every time.

Is there something I am missing when using the Wolff springs? Any help is appreciated. Thanks....

The Wolff spring should be cut to 28" for the 590. Measure your shells to make sure you are using standard length 2 3/4" shells. Some shells are longer than others. With the longer shells you will only be able to get 7 in the tube.

Standard 2 3/4" shells measure 2.25" before they are fired.

max100, i got my spring in the mail today thanks that was fast. Will i need to cut this to 28 right now its at about 28 1/2 ? also do i need to taper the ends like the factory spring? if so what is the best way to do that?
Thanks

The factory "tapered" spring isn't reliable that why it needs to be replaced. I cut it and shaped it for you. It's ready to go.

You don't need the spring retainer but it will keep the spring from flying, if you forget it has been removed, when removing the cap.

I always remove mine. There will be a little more room in the tube without one.

Max, if you wouldn't mind keeping an ear out. I might send you a word and a couple of bucks when I get the Maverick 88 out of the shop.

The Maverick 88 has a closed sealed mag tube. You would have to screw the mag tube from the receiver to change the mag spring out. The mag springs in the 500 and 88 don't usually give problems and last a very long time.

Oh I know, I'm just sketchy considering it's in the shop for magazine issues.

maleman,

the 590, although know for spring binding, has another small issue that may be contributing to the problem.

not sure if all, but some 590 have small dimples inside the mag tube towards the top (closer to the cap) that will bind up the magazine follower if loaded past the magazine capacity.

not sure why they would put the dimples in, maybe to prevent the mag follower from falling out? kind of a dumb idea, but they can be sanded out.
