I created an account just now to figure out the origin of my mossberg 500 feeding problems. i recently got the gun this fall from a dealer, it was used, but not fired gun, so i was told. Everything looked great and worked fine until i took out the plug and loaded in 4 shells. the spring would jam and not push the last 2 shells out. i was just pushing a cleaning rod down the magazine tube to free it up, thinking it was just a bit sticky from sitting. after oil and cycling through shell after shell with it still happening i decided i would take it apart to clean it. i found this mystery piece jammed into the spring...wondering if it is a factory tool or something that got lost in the tube and maybe the reason it was originally sent back?? its a small stainless rod hooked at one end with a very small hole on the tip..anyone have any ideas to what it is?

How much we bet it was a "cheater" tool that would hold pressure off the follower while they installed the tube...:o
That is my guess...

lokks like a mauled home made plug. Not really, but that is my ignorant guess.

Good guess, Brent.
It sure isn't a prize from a CrackerJack box.
Perhaps someone didn't know how to remove the duck plug... Buy gun, realize there's a plug in place, try to remove it without reading the manual, lose hook in mag, sell gun... wouldn't be the first time.

Out of the many times I've completely stripped my 500, I've never seen anything that looks like that.

I'm curious now...I'd email that pic to Mossberg and ask them what it's used for.

That would make my day if I were a customer service guy at Mossberg...

Take your pic of the first three posts... could be any of them. I'll put a dollar or two on Brent though.

Not sure if it was used by the previous owner to remove the plug. the plug was in the tube when i got it and it was fresh from a mossberg factory refurbish, but you never know. i was just wondering if it was some random manufacturer faux pas

Naw...some dimwit pushed that into the magazine, probably trying to remove the plug, or possibly didn't even realize there was a plug in there and was blindly fishing around trying to figure out why he couldn't push in more shells.

Emailed the guys at mossberg. got a reply in under 12hrs,which is pretty darn good i think. but the guy only said that it isnt a part of a mossberg 500 which i already knew. he didnt say anything about if it was usedin the manufacturing process....he didnt really answer any of my questions.
