I finally get to pick up my mossberg 590 and my little marlin plinker from big5 on saturday, my question is do I have to clean them before I shoot them, or can I fire a bunch of rounds through them and clean them when I get home? They are brand new out of the box guns so I don't know if they're all oiled and ready for action yet. I know for my brothers sniper rifle he had to clean his gun after ever bullet as it was brand new and he needed to break it in. Then again, his gun is about two thousand dollars more than mine.

Normally, new guns have a rustproofing used on all parts, I make it a habit to break down the firearm to groups and clean all parts well. Re-lub necessary parts re-assemble and head for the range.
With your 590 pay close attention to the chamber area and make sure it is totally free of any rustproofing, this may require the use of a chamber brush and strong degreaser. Keeping the chamber area clean is essential to flawless operation of this scattergun.
I always like new guns in my hands, there is unlimited potential there, Congrads on the new guns, my wish to you is as always with a new shotgun "that it will shoot to where you look, every time you choose."

Will do. I'll probably mess with them a little when I get home because saturday is going to be snowboarding with a bunch of friends since they finally are done with finals :P I'll just pick them up on the way home and shoot them sunday, then I'll have time to check them out and do whatever is needed.

With the barrel off I would spray some gun scrubber on a rag and sop the mop thru the chamber if you don't have a brush. It is easy to tear down the gun especially if you use the online videos by liberty.

I'm with Scattergun Bob on this one - it should be completely stripped down, cleaned, lubed and put back together before its fired. Cleaning the bore and the chamber is insufficient in my opinion / take the trigger group out, etc.

You guys are overestimating my capabilities here, this is my first gun lol. I'll youtube as many videos as I can and read up how to do it, I really don't want to mess up something in the gun when I take it apart to clean it. Oh well, mistakes are part of learning :D

We don't want you to do that, honest. If you would like when your are ready to take it apart, I will do it with you we can step by step with P/M's. I am sure Brent would do the same for you. Not to worry, we just want your shooting experience to be a good one.
The reason I suggest cleaning first is so that you do not loose confidence in this fine shotgun. Often times if one of my students had a problem with a brand new issue weapon, they had to spend twice as much time getting there confidence back.
What ever you choose to do, understand for a few of us here on the forum, our goal is to help folks like you thru the mud holes and bogs of misinformation and myth about scatterguns and scattergun stuff.

Ah, great to hear :) At the very least, I could take it down to a local gun shop and see if they can teach me anything during a slow day. Then again, the internet has everything and I'm positive I could find a step by step manual on this baby. Can't wait till saturday :D

I will see Bob's offer and raise him one... I will PM you my phone number and either you call me or I will call you (I have free Long Distance) and we can work it out that way... Put me on speaker phone and fire away and as you do it I will be looking at a similar gun to understand you and your questions...
These guns need nothing special from tools or yourself... I will do my best to see you thru this...
