Shooter or Wall-hanger

I am looking for things to look at when buying used/older shotguns (SxS & O/U). I understand the Damascus issue, but wondering if there are other tell-tale signs/things to look for. I am looking for shooters only. (why own it if you can't shoot it!). I am new to the antique gun circle, mainly own modern firearms and hoping to reach out to some more "seasoned" individuals for info on old shotties.

They can all be shot,including Damascus, if in the proper condition and using the proper loads. You need to hook up with a good Smith who knows old doubles.. JFC
