i am currently employed by the Florida Dept. of Corrections, and i was wondering about the issue of Concealed Carry Permit. i am told that as long as we have photographic representation that i am a certified officer that i do not need a concealed weapons permit to carry off-duty. does this mean i can simply photo copy my state I.D. tag which has the florida statute number identifying me as being state certified? does that allow me to carry in other states? i have gotten several different answers to these questions.if anyone knows for sure or at least can tell me in laymans terms. i hate trying to decipher the lawyer-speak of the statutes. thank you :)

you a state ID card not just a 'tag'...
You really need to find out for sure if you can carry in Florida 'off duty' with that. I would guess (and only guess) that if you carry on duty you can carry off also. As for out of state, I think you have to have the power to arrest in your state do be considered for the LEO national carry.

I can't blame you for that.

I would never presume to advise you on the state of FL law.
In your position, I would want something in writing from your department. Something your buddy Joe said his supervisor said about the law isn't going to be useful if it is wrong. If the state itself, renders an opinion, that is another matter.

There was a big discussion of this issue on the www.policeone site:

we are not issued weapons on or off the job. only certain posts are issued weapons and they never leave the facility except under certain circumstances.

It's pretty darn easy to get a FL permit and they're good in like 31 states. What would be the down side of getting it whether you need it or not?

Check with your employer about their policy on off duty carry. That would be a good place to start.
To carry in other states under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 (LEOSA), you need to get an ID card from your employing agency that certifies that you are LEOSA compliant and meet all of the criteria (criteria such as type of agency, duties of the officer, authority to carry a firearm as part of duties, etc.).
A Florida Concealed Firearm License is easy to get and now is good for seven years.
