Fired one slug, the racked another one in, misfire, pull back slide to clear, and barrel fell right off. No idea how! The endcap had been on securely, and i found it on the ground with the barrel (20 inch deer)!

P.S.

Im guessing this is dangerous.

I would say that it is very dangerous. Don't shoot it again! Its hard to say anything for sure without seeing it though. Do you think you could get some pictures of your gun and barrel up? Or better yet is there a competent smith that you might be able to have look over it for you? Did you check the barrel to see if there were any blockages or if perhaps the barrel has been dented? Look over the gun before you do anything else with it. See if there is anything that looks amiss.

I know a couple people who can take a look at it, barrel looks completely normal

The 870?

Do the threads on the cap look ok?

Do you think maybe you didn't have the end cap screwed on all the way?

it was on securely, didn't check endcaps threading though. hopefully it is the endcap, those are cheap enough to replace.

Post a pic of the barrel. Look at the bottom of the barrel about 6" from the muzzle. Is there a bare, sort of bronze colored spot?

Slopemeno is thinking the same thing I am; if the end cap didn't fall off or the threading on the mag tube didn't strip off, really the only way this can happen is for the brazing holding the barrel-ring to the barrel to break.

Wouldn't be the first time we've heard of such a failure.

Try to find a split in the cap?

The cap does look a little worn, ill have someone who knows more about this stuff looka t it and replace it. And Brent, sorry, i just don't like mossberg all that much. Did see a winchester trench gun on sale yesterday though....

Were you able to get it looked at yet?

Just curious as to what caused it.

endcap threading was worn, went and got a new one, person i asked thinks that the weather going hot/cold/hot/cold may have had an effect on it too.

May I suggest a little diddy?
I always test the safety of an arm either before or after a shooting session as well as any "finger tight" fittings. If it is a metal nut wear is a concern. If plastic heat can kill them. Tightly reloading a fishing reel while under the load of a fight while well chilled and putting it away as such can and does result in split hubs when it heats up in summer...
Just a little sumpin' I learned the hard way...

Based upon my observations... from World Champions on down, many Remington stick gun competitors have a common, almost subconscious compulsion of frequently snugging-up the mag cap. :D

While I do not suggest others should violate a factory rule, I always give my barrel retainer bolt a couple more clicks of tension with pliers on my mossberg. I am no weakling but cannot for the life of me understand how a factory manual can suggest "finger tight" when everyone is different. Heck my finger tight is tighter than some do with a wrench. Every fastener has a torque value.

Seems the factory engineers figure you can't break it, no matter how manly your vice like finger grip, without a tool. Suggest a tool, and some fool is going to over do it and demand warranty service.
