What do you think about an agency that requires their male plain clothes detectives, to wear a tie/tye?

If it is required, they should wear it. Clip ons are always acceptable in law enforcement situations.

Are you talking about Robbery / Homicide and Property Crimes? I understand the issue, it's the same that was dealt with in the patrol realm many years ago.

Our Robbery / Homicide detectives do wear real ties - daily - clip ons don't go well with real suits. When there is any chance that they may even think about arresting someone, they race for a polo shirt and a pair of jeans.
