The spin imparted by the rifling will cause the shot column to widen to a larger pattern than usual, but to what extent I'm not sure.

will it make the shotgun less accurate using buck shot? not useful for a home defense weapon? could it ruin the rifling?

Yes.

Maybe.

No.

1,The input I've gotten from folks using those rifled bbls and shot is the pattern's history at an amazingly short range. One report was 36" at 5 yards. With the abundance of new and used smoothbore bbls, this is easily solved.

2,It would certainly reduce effectiveness, and possibly endanger non-perps.

3,It won't ruin the rifling, but you'll be scrubbing stuff outa those grooves ad infinitum.

how much would a short bbl in legal length cost?

D@mn, we're on real time here. Check with your local gun shops that handles police turnins. Last time I looked, worn but serviceable 18", bead sight bbls were going for $75, but YMMV. These are near perfect for HD.Not bad for quail either.

HTH....
