Deterrents, such as a good alarm system and/or a good guard dog, combined with a stong door and sturdy lock will minimize the need for having the gun SO readily accesible.

I know I already posted this but a little common sense goes a long way. Besides, if you are dead asleep, even a Howitzer would be useless. Why risk dropping the gun or accidental discharges when it is absolutely unnecessary. If there is a professional hit man after you, you're pretty much dead no matter what. I don't believe that is the case for many of us so stop being so damned paranoid. You're going to give yourself a heart attack!
