Hmmm.... user input means a lot in this question. One of my best "values" Is a Smith post war pre model 10. It's classic, elegant, hits what I aim at, is wood and steel, and I paid less than $400 for it just a few years ago. But I'm a collector.

Ask the same question to someone else and they're apt to say a Glock 19. And in the duty pistol realm I think it would be hard to argue against it.

Ask someone in the cowboy action shooting world and they may point you to one of the better Italian 1873 replicas.

Ask someone in the uspsa realm and lord knows what you may get, but CZ P09s were pretty popular at one point.

Ask someone worried primarily about CCW and they may tell you a SW shield is hard to beat.

Bullseye competitors may favor solid mid grade 1911s.

I could keep going. It depends on what you're into.
