Just to correct a misperception, Lotus Notes is NOT a relational database. It is a general purpose object store. Therefore, I don't believe that running a SQL query would have any effect.

That said, it's possible that whatever dump they might do would take longer, but it shouldn't be impossible. The simple solution would be to export predetermined fields to ASCII, and call it a day. I can't imagine that would take too much in the way of resources.

Let me see if I can get my contacts at Lotus to give me some feedback.
