AK's are known to shoot trash ammo of all kinds and still function. I don't think that FMJ ammo is the answer. Even if it were, you should not be limited to shooting only FMJ. That being the case, there is something wrong with the rifle that his good cleaning did not fix.
I've shot just about everything out of mine and never had a problem.
