Glock 17.
I got mine for $489. They're usually in the high 400s and low 500s. It's quite possibly the most versatile gun out there. Extremely reliable, cheap to shoot, simple to maintain, excellent for competition, and accurate enough as-is for most people. |

I agree with Impreza except if it is just one all around gun, I'd go with the 19 for decent enough size for target and sport shooting and concealability over the 17.
I got mine in a private party transfer for 450 with night sights. |

+1 on the Glock. Also, cdnninvestments.com has FN Hi-Powers for about $400, which is probably the best deal you'll ever see on a Hi-Power.

Certified Pre-Owned Sig
Smith and Wesson M&P Springfield XD FN Hi-power Springfield 1911 GI CZ I also have to add Glocks, although I'm not a big fan of the weird grip angle. You should be able to find these all for about $500. The Hi-power may be a little less expensive, but it is an extremely nice firearm which has been proven time after time over the past 70 years. The Certified Pre-Owned Sigs can vary in price and they usually have some finish wear, but the CPO Sigs have any worn out parts replaced before being certified and are usually a great value. These are all fine quality firearms though, and they will all last a lifetime.

CZ75 SP-01 or P-01 depending on what you need it for.
You can get a decent 1911 for that price as well. Possibly one of the used (non-CPO) Sig 226s at my local gunstore, which has two or three of them for $450 each for some reason. |

What to do, What to do.....
Lots of choices for $500.00 if you buy wisely. I can only comment, with any degree of knowledge about the ones I have bought in that price range.
1st is the S W MP40, $409.95 at gun show (exceptional price), then the baby Desert Eagle 9mm for $497.00 at Academy Sports, in semi's. Both great guns!! I also have a Sigma SW9VE that's very dependabe and only cost me $318.00 at Academy Sports. Harder and longer trigger but good gun. And then there are the revolvers. Too many more choices. My favorite is the S & W MP. Check out all the forums by gun name such as, S & W Forum, Walther forum, Xd forum, etc,etc.... There are many. Just keep in mind that all gun owners are biased. The only way to know which gun fits you, I would suggest, is going a gun range that rents guns and try out some of the guns recommened here by myself and other posters.

M and S series Steyr. Highly under rated and usually reasonably priced. I paid $350 for my S9 last year, LNIB with 3 mags. Great gun- 100% reliability after several hundred rounds.
