First Kaboom I've seen on video
Just looking over the first page, I didn't notice this had already been posted. Though I'd be surprised if it hadn't made the rounds by now. Assuming it's real, I sure hope the guy's okay.
Mods, please note this site does sometimes have objectionable material. I just thought this was interesting as I've never actually seen a 'Kaboom' before. Apologies if this is a double-post or inappropriate. http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/80658040/ |

um ok?
I listened to the video and my question is, what happened? All I kept hearing besides him say "oh my god" since the video started was a big Boom, what happened?

Blind, The stainless bolt action rifle seemed to have had a barrel obstruction and suffered a full banana peeled barrel split into three or 4 petals.

The video won't play on some browsers, but here's a version that will always play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEOEu6k6sFE That was caused by dirt in the barrel. You can see the clump of dirt pop out when the barrel splits. The shooter probably allowed his muzzle to sink into the the soft ground and caused an obstruction which of course lead to catastrophic barrel failure. Until I saw this video or the pics of the guy that had a similar experience while shooting and forgetting to take his boresighter out of the barrel, I had no idea the gun barrel splits open like it does in old Elmer Fudd cartoons. |

I always put a little piece of tape over the end of my barrel when I go hunting. If the tape is askew I know something's gone into the barrel that ought not be there. This makes me glad that I got into that habit.

I used to buy bags full of little tiny OD green balloons at the dollar store to go over the muzzle of my hunting rifles. Same reason.

Bud, Is it safe to forget to pull the balloon off? It seems they may not be able to cause damage if forgotten... Are they the "hand grenade" water balloons?

What you don't see in the video, and what you need a special enhancement software program to see, is seconds before the shot, a tall bunny pops out of the ground and puts a half eaten carrot into the end of the barrel very quickly. Using an ultrasonic hearing program, clearly in the background noise you can hear, "Whats up doc"........

Someone posted this a couple of days ago also.
It *seems* like a training video or a fake to me, for one reason. The camera NEVER, not one time, leaves the gun. If you were filming a hunt and the guys gun blew up in his face would your priority be to get a good shot of the gun? I don't think so. Instinct would have you turning to your friend to see if he's OK, not getting a good shot of the gun. Not to mention that they seem a little to calm considering that a gun just blew up. "Oh my God." Like they just saw a cool firework go off or something. "Wow. *Yawn* That was special. Ooohh." Not saying it IS fake, just seems a little to "cool" for my BS meter.

Peet, It would take a foolish person or someone real sure of the hidden body and head armor to intentionally hold a rifle as it blows up! I was always a crazy person willing to take risks, but I will stick with jumping over candle sticks!

Plus, the guys all act like it's just another day at the office. Camera Dude: "Dang dude. Your gun just blew up." Gun Dude: "Yeah, sucks huh, just got her waxed too." Camera Dude: "Well, I guess we better head back to camp... see what's for dinner." Gun Dude: "Yep... guess so, wonder where that there moose went?" Camera Dude: "Don't know, probably skeered him though, with the gun exploding and all." Gun Dude: "Yeah, it was kinda.... loud." Camera Dude: "Yep." Gun Dude: "Yep."

Yeah, you can use your old disposeable ear plugs in the barrel end too..... stops the gunk & water gettin' in... and just go for a wee ride with the bullet when you let one go

Dirt actually tends to blow out of the barrel, more often than not. Sticks, rocks, and ice, however, are likely to cause the catastrophic failure seen here. |

Sounds like FrankenMauser has done some extensive gun destroying, er, I mean testing. To know which materials will and which will not blow them up.

Most of the banana-peel barrels had one of two replies to my questions: "Some idiot forgot to take the stick out." ..or.. "Dumb guy thought it would be fun to shoot with the barrel under water." Dirt, and similar substances usually don't do anything. In bad cases, it will 'ring' the barrel with a bulge. (A bulge most people won't even notice.) Of course.... it all depends upon the barrel in question. |

Come on guys... You know it was a .40 S&W. Them over pressure rounds will blow up anything not made of unobtainium with 10% unbreakablium as a hardener in them.

I think most bolts are designed so the bolt does not fly out even in the event of catastrophic failure.

The cross section loaded in shear usually holds up well after the barrel and receiver ring have failed. |

Did something get stuck in the barrel? Is that the reason for the balloons, condoms, tape and other foreign objects in the end of your guns?
