Actually, yes, that would be a malfunction. It is one induced by an outside source, but still a malfunction. Simply put, a malfunction is one where something functions wrongly or not at all.

Following up on 1000 round matches being held annually (Fall) in OK, JohnKSa and I set up the ISHOT 1000 round matches in north Texas (Spring), in part to debunk what does not really work and to look for what does work in semi-auto handguns. As noted above, the cry of Mulligans can be quite loud. It is almost never the gun. It is the ammo, hard primers, the shooter, the recoil spring, the magazine, the lube, etc., anything but the gun. Between the Texas and Oklahoma matches, we see guns that have "never" malfunctioned that mysteriously malfunction for the first time, often early in the matches.

We document the malfunctions. It is surprising the number of folks that have malfunctions and who don't remember them by the end of the day or ever again. For example, at the match just held in Oklahoma last month, we had a guy on my squad who had 2 malfunctions during the first stage of the match but later in the day believed he was malfunction-free until he was shown his score sheet.

Only 2 that have NEVER failed.

Springfield MilSpec 1911A1 in .45 ACP
Smith & Wesson SW9VE

But most of the other failures are probably due to the fact I shoot mostly my own reloads.

H&K USP .45 - failure to extract when casing is not sized exactly right. The H&K is very sensitive to even slightly over-sized casings so, if my sizing die is a little worn the H&K may not extract.

S&W M&P .40 - occasionally will fail to fire. But I use CCI small pistol primers which are known to be slightly harder than Federal or other popular brands.

SIG P-225 - doesn't always like JHP ammo. Never fails to feed RN, but HPs don't always make it past the feed ramp.

All 3 of my Kahrs (PM9, P9 and P45) even through the recomended 200 rd "break in period". My 2 Glocks (G19,23). Even my new 1911A1 Colt Commander (Bob Tailed) has been flawless through the first 500 rds.

Color me tickled pink...

Les Baer Monolith Heavy, Custom 10X 1911 .45 ACP, Glock 23, Glock 19 These are the pistols I have kept and are my "permanent" keepers. Not one of these has failed in any way for thousands of rounds (collectively). I quit reloading years ago though I have a bench/setup. I only shoot factory ammo in all of them. I trade a lot, and shoot a lot of pistols, most that come and go are reliable. For the not so many rounds I shoot through them. It has been my experience that most failures are magazine and especially reloaded ammo related. I shoot with reloaders that have quite a few failures. I clean & lube my pistols after approx. 100-150 rounds. Using Rem Oil and synthetic grease. Some may go for months in storage before they are shot. None have failed to run with this lube combination. Even after months of bedside table neglect.

My Glock 17, Browning HP + 4 S&W revolvers have been 100% reliable so far. So was my LesBear .45 I had for a couple of months. I sold it (reluctantly

) to fund my Dlask Arms AR15 which also has been 100% so far.

My Sig P229 9mm is a jam-o-matic. FTF, FTE, slide not locking back on last round, you name it... It's back to Sig right now. I hope they find a way to fix it or give me a new one

...and older Sig 220. I don't count the trigger return spring breakage as a 'malfunciton' per se, more like needing to replace tires on a car.

Well geez, guys, I thought this was the semi-auto forum. Since everybody is including their revolvers, I can add my Ruger Redhawk and Thompson Center Contender. Oh and my Stevens model 34 .22 that hasn't yet fired today's crap bulk loads.

They're upgrading scout/patrol vehicles with added armor and blast-resistant undercarriages, so yes, "shot up" could broadly be considered a design malfunction by the guys riding in them.

My RIA 1911 is 100% reliable thus far, if the ammunition fits the chamber, I had some reloads that were "out of spec" and wouldn't completely slide into the chamber.

Both of my XD's are 100% reliable thus far.

Springfield XD-9 Bi-tone, 9mm.

Reloads, hollowpoints, factory ball. Those two eat anything.

Ok, so a Humvee getting shot up in Iraq is a malfunction?

We are not talking about automotive malfunctions here, and yes, like it or not, however minor, your broken trigger return spring is a malfunction unless you deliberately broke it for some reason.

Regardless, that's a pretty impressive track record.
