If its new and has the xmark pro trigger its pretty easy. Just remove the stock and then on the front of the trigger group there are 2 allen head screws. The bottom one that is farthest away from the receiver is the weight adjustment. You need to scrape the stuff out of it so you can get an allen wrench in there. Once that stuff is out of the way you turn the screw out to adjust it lighter. I tried a full turn out and that was too much for me on my rifle, so I turned it back in a quarter turn and was happy with it. Once you have it adjusted put a dab of fingernail polish on the screw so it stays in place.

I gotta go with kdub, before you do anything you need a baseline on what it will do out of the box. Like he says it may surprise you. take the gun apart and clean it including the bolt. It's important to get the insides of the bolt clean.

Adjust the trigger to make a nice clean 3.5 pound break, 2.5 pounds is to light for a hunting rifle, OK for a varmit rifle, but it does not take much excitement jumping a deer or elk to make that light a trigger unsafe. Lots of time if the trigger has no overtravel and has a nice clean break it's hard to tell the difference in that one pound, but it is safer. There's a sticky in this section that tells you how. Make sure all the action screws are tight when you reassemble. Make sure the scope mounts are on right and the screws are tight. Put a drop of fingernail polish on each scope base screw before you tighten them down. Make sure your scope is level and the focus is adjusted for your son.

Do the break in shooting, cleaning, shooting. Use a good solid bench with enough sandbags to really support the gun. Keep the targets so you can compare to later if you do need to do something to the gun to improve accuracy. My suggestions before you do any bedding on a synthetic stock is to check if the forarm is touching the barrel. you should be able to run a dollar bill down to within three or four inches of the front of the reciever. If it hangs up, pull the barrel and action out of the stock and using sandpaper relieve the barrel channel where it's touching.
