Taurus M44
Well, i finally got the perfect gun for my protection out riding in the woods. 4 inch, ported, 6 shot 44 mag. Its a Taurus M44. Wont be worried about any grizzlies here in Arizona, just the 2 and four legged bears. I got it instead of a 357 mag because i can always shoot a lighter load, but heavy when the time is right. I've had some other S&W revolvers in the past, but this is my first Taurus and a 44 mag at that. What can i expect out of the gun? Its a pretty heavy gun, which will probably help. I haven't shot it yet, just need to find time.
Where can i find a decent hip holster for this gun? Bass pro shop and Cabelas didn't have what i was looking for. Sure i could of made one work, but it just didn't feel right. When i drive my rzr on the trail, I use a drop leg holster. The M44 barley fits in there, but that's my only option for now. I want a hip holster for the times i take it out on the quad, and for even around town. Here's some pics ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hmm, the bluing on that gun isn't half bad at all. That is one nice step in the right direction for Taurus. I just wish they would stop drilling holes in everything they make.

very nice pictures, i wish i was as good a cameraman. congrats on your mod 44, i have 1 too and i like it alot. i'm not sure what you mean by a decent holster. I got an unlined holster and belt from cabelsa that i like. anything that says s&w or ruger should work for you. i would prefer a lined holster but mine is unlined.

The ones i find(uncle mikes, etc) are too small. Not a big fan of them. The trigger guard is huge on this gun.

my 4" taurus mod 44 is a more comfortable gun to shoot than my 7 1/2' redhawk. the recoil of the redhawk is more straight up taking longer to get back on target. the taurus, because of the porting is different, more of a straight back push than rising like the redhawk. i think it makes a second shot faster. it also makes the end of the barrel more dirty and something else to spend time cleaning. at least that is my findings. i'm not sure how it effects the ballistics in a 4" gun. |

That is actually a nice looking revolver, and definately one of the Taurus pistols that I like ( there is 3 or 4). Congrat's on your new purchase, I would love to pack that peice with some 44 spl's for personal protection ''in town''.

I own the 44C, which is a lighter 5 shot 4" ported barrel model. Recoil is definately lighter than my friend's Black Hawk with the 4 5/8 barrel. So yours ought to be less than that. Mine had problems with Blazer 44 Spl ammo backing out of the cylinder and catching the blast shield. Other than that it's a fairly good gun. The trigger isn't nice and smooth, but it's not terrible. An easy fix.

Managed to shoot off a few rounds yesterday on the trail. That is one hell of a gun. Accurate as hell too. I was expecting more of a punch from the recoil but its close to a mild 357 round
It sure is loud

I have 3 holsters for my 4" Redhawk. #1 - Uncle Mike's sidekick large revolver holster. Nylon. Fits on a "utility" belt like a Wilderness Instructor Belt. ![]() I actually carried my Redhawk in this for a 2 day backpacking trip up into the Superstitions this last weekend. #2 - Simply Rugged pancake holster. I use this when I want to "conceal" my 4" Redhawk. It's outer waistband, keeps the gun held high and tight against my side, and contours well against the body. With an unbuttoned cover shirt, you can't see the gun. These come from Simply Rugged, formerly up in AK and now down in Prescott, AZ. #3 - A custom holster from Tactical Holster Solutions (THS holsters). This small holster maker works out of Caswell's gun shop in Mesa. Drop off your gun for a day or two, let the guy know what you want the holster to do, and he'll make you a holster to fit that purpose. I got this from him: ![]() It's a kydex holster that changes from paddle to belt-clip. The front of the holster is cut away for a faster draw and presentation. I got this holster for shooting ICORE with my moonclipped Redhawk.

I have owned four Taurus revolvers, this one the sight fell off and Taurus said they would send me a new sight, after 8 months later and numerous calls and emails. I had two that the cylinders locked up on and had to be sent in for repairs (shipping out of my pocket), it took over a month for both to be fixed. I have had a 75% failure rate with Taurus, lucky I sold them off and went to Rugers instead. I had one Ruger that need to go back, less than two week turn around, all labor and shipping free. My uncle gave me a Mini-14, I needed some parts to the sight that my Uncle lost, called Ruger free parts arrived in less than a week. |

I used a generic N-Frame revolver pancake holster that held my M44 pretty well for conceal and carry. At least with a loose button up shirt. It just won't happen with a T-shirt.
Mine was very solid. And I could hit a gong at 80 yards almost every time .
