Has anyone here been shot?

Anyone here been shot? If so, do you know by what caliber and type of gun? Where did you get hit on the body? Did you feel it immediately (I know of LEO being grazed and not knowing it until their adrenalin eases up from the shootout)? What kind of damage did it do? How long to recover? Did you shoot back at them? Hit them? Kill them?

Thank you for sharing your experiences. We can all learn from them.

I suspect this kind of thread would be too painful for some and something others would rather forget....

I can understand and appreciate that viewpoint. However, if anyone is comfortable discussing it in a positive supportive enviroment it would be interesting and beneficial to others. Thank you.

This is my story of being shot. Read it, it was an accidental shooting. It is easier for me to give the link than to retype it.

How? What are you going to learn?

I do not see how you cannot learn about being shot from someone who has been shot. You do not experience the pain (which I might add was immediate), the smell of your own blood (mixed with others), the anguish as to how serious it is, and that is if you are still able to think logically or not passed out from shock.

The only real thing to learn is to not let it happen to you.

When I was a teen I had the bright idea of shooting my palm point blank with a paint ball gun. I instantly regretted doing that. It hit my hand very hard and felt like I pulverized my palm. No permanent damage or anything, just a painful shock.

That was a paintball. I don't want to imagine would a .45 would feel like.

Are you writing a book or something? That is one that I have seen for reasons to ask various questions that strike people odd on here. The dearth of responses to your question implies to me that most of these people are apparently safe and the types that get into gunfights are not on here either. So much for all gun owners being violent types or involved in such.

I was shot through the left hand with a BB gun at point-blank range when I was 9. The pain was immediate, and rather severe. It's hard to describe exactly. The sensation was similar to a time (later in life) that I stepped on a nail. It's funny.... it happened 25 years ago and when I really concentrate on it and how it felt my hand still aches.

I was 16 y.o.(1972) Myself and a couple of friends had bought a brick of .22LR and headed to the hills for some shooting. One of the guys I was with had brought a .22 revolver of unknown make.I was standing at the back of the car retrieving my gear and the fellow with the revolver was preparing to take a couple of shots before going up the hill(he was standing at the front of the car).We were parked along side a very remote road in No.CA. As he was getting ready to shoot a car was coming down the road he turned 180 deg.as he did so the gun went off hitting me in the upper left chest just below my heart.
Earlier we had stopped at a small bar in the hills and bought some sodas and in the bar were a couple of friends of my families. They were on their way to go 4 wheeling in their jeeps. We had no idea that they were just over a small hill from where I had just been shot. One of them heard the shot and had the infinite good wisdom to walk over and check out who was shooting so close to the road. One of the guys he was with had just returned home from Viet Nam and was a Medic. The two guys I was with were just frozen and could do nothing(probably still can't)The Medic and the family friend took immeadiate action. The Medic retrieved a sleeping bag, put me in it,treated me for shock the other went down the road and found a state trooper who radioed a CA Division of Foresty crew on the other side of the mountain. This was all before 911 was national and life flight helicopters and rest of the fancy EMS stuff we have today. Those pilots landed in the middle of a little mountain road 65mi east of San Jose/40 mi So. of Livermore the town we were all from.
This helicopter was for spotting wildfires not rescue. They placed me in the in the back and flew me to San Jose Medical Center were I underwent surgery for a gunshot wound.
I had two holes in my left lung, spleen, stomach, liver and the bullet split and lodged in T-12,L-1 in my spine(still there).I remember waking up after the surgery and the Docs asking me to move my legs, my Mother and Dad were standing there when I moved both of my legs.I will never forget the tears in my Fathers eyes when I was able to move my legs.
My family had always been fairly religous and my parents had given each of their children a St. Christopher medallion on a chain, I was wearing mine.
(St.Christopher is the guardian of children, animals and fools)
I was very sick for about 3 mos. lost 70lbs. It took close to year before I felt good again.I had always wanted to be fireman since I was a boy.I was able to fullfill that dream and became a firefighter paramedic in the town I grew up in.Did a full career with 29 years of service and a 4 year stint in the USAF. I am retired now.
The doctor who saved my life said if were not for a strong heart and St. Christopher I should have been dead or paralyzed.
Did it change me? you bet it did. I take nothing for granted I smell the roses every day.I am here to tell you that there is such a thing as devine intervention.
This is the first time since I was shot that I have put in words. It felt good to do so.

I'm not going into detail. So to directly answer the question. I was shot three separate times in Vietnam. The first two times were not life threatening but the last one was by a sniper and in the lower back. I was lucky by millimeters.

Fast forward 15 years. I was home alone in my high rise condo. I heard the door open and went to investigate, thinking it was maintenance people. I surprised three BG's armed with 9mm pistols. I was shot three times. I played dead. Thought I was going to bleed to death. They got what they came for and I managed to call 911 before blacking out. Not one person did not remark how lucky I was to be alive. Several surgeries and a couple of years of physical therapy to recover physically.

Lesson learned...never, ever be unarmed. My guns were not handy as they were locked away in my safe. Now guns are stashed all over my house and unless I'm in the shower, I have one on my hip. Have one on right now with a Glock 21 sitting in a "book" right next to my desk.

I started to type what happened to me and then I really thought about it... Something I do not want to think about anymore/again.

I get sick and tired of people who want to glamorize any-type of shooting. I can not stand video war games and I have a hard time watching combat shows on television. Nothing glamorous about blood and death.

As a kid my buddies and I used to harrass this old corn farmer and one day he cut down on us, 12 Ga. & rock salt. I caught 3 pieces in the back of my right leg, still have the scars.

Hurt like Heck and no pity at home from parents or grandparents. Nobody even went after the salt. They made me wait for it to dissolve.

The experience gave me a different outlook on life, I quit pestering people.

my coworkers

I have had four co-workers shot.
One was a .38 in the arm point blank.
He was patched up and set home.
One with birdshot at a short distance.
He was patched up and sent home.
Both complained of pain.
One was with a shotgun twice.
He died.
One was shot several times with handguns including headshot.
He is still recovering after over one year.

Well, last year I shot my wife....with a pump action airsoft shotgun. I shot her in the foot without shoes on. She was not happy! Those things leave a nasty mark.

Avoid it if you can it hurts. But on the other hand I always know when it will rain fragments still in upper left shoulder.

The neck is still sore and hard to move left to right at times from being stabbed in the back of my neck. That hurt too.

Longranger- sounds like Mines Road, right? That's about as remote as it gets until you get to the Sierras.
