30mm scope mount recommendation for AR15
I have the Colt AR15, H/bar flat top, and if there is any recommendations from anyone on a 30mm scope mount. They can range dramatically in price. I want to get a quality one, but don't want to get ripped off either.
Thanks for your imput... |

To take full advantage of the flat top AR (flexibility), I recommend ARMS #22 throw lever rings. I can remove and replace mine all day long with no zero change.

I'm completely the opposite, I like the ability of having my rings REALLY torqued down. The 30mm rings offered by Les Baer Costum allow you to get an actual 1/2" socket and torque wrench onto the large nuts and fasten properly. There are several brands that are built with this design. The Baers cost $96 and are designed similar to the Extreame Duty Mk4 line offered by Leupold. There are also models offered by MWG and US Tactical that incorperate these large securing nuts and SOLID-STEEL designs, selling at $130 & $119.
Even the AR/M16 disconect system that's considered the best and most expensive(at $247 per mount) used by the US military, still advertises a .000something loss of repeatment. It is guarenteed to offer 1/8" or less loss of accuracy during reattachment. This is the military model built by DC Engineering in Detroit Michigan, and are machined more precise than the A.R.M.S mounts. To me, making full use of a flat-top is solidly securing the scope to the receiver. That's an HBAR model you're talking about. Quick-detatch would be better utilized on M4 or Carbine models, not on precision rifles where the scope is meant to stay. I have never seen an A2 length AR case that wouldn't accept a scope mounted on a flat-top, so removal for transport isn't a requirement. But then again, all my flat-tops are dedicated precision rifles. The only AR I have now that has removable optics is an A2 carbine model and a compact ACOG, but I consider this a short range defensive rifle. Still, the ACOG remains mounted at all times. There is also the 1-piece 30mm Armalite mount that's cantilevered forward about an inch, but everytime I tried to check one out they were backordered. This system uses 2 coin-slotted knurled nuts for securing, but posters are reporting replacing the nuts with the more solid ones sold by Bushmaster. Looks like a good system if you have a longer scope tube and lack an adjustable buttplate. I think the similar RRA model is still only available in 1" rings. Good Luck |
