The good states

Hey all, I was looking to get the final word on what states are good, and what states are bad, with respect to guns. I live in CA (that's bad) but will be moving soon and had some priorities.

Really good states must have all of the following:

Shall issue CCW permits (or Vermont style)
Class 3 is OK
Hi-cap magazines OK
Tracers and AP rounds OK

Really Bad states are states with ANY of the following:

bans on any type of "assault weapon"
bans on any type of magazine
bans on any type of handgun
local towns/cities that ban any of the above

Every other state is just "OK"

So far, the list of "bad states" seem to be as follows:

California (duh), Hawaii, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC (although not really a state), Connecticut, and Illinois.

Good states:

Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska.

Please feel free to suggest any additional criteria for a good state or bad state, and by all means, help me complete the list!

Georgia is good according to your list as well. In fact, in Kennesaw, GA, every household is required by law to have a firearm on the premises. One little old lady didn't have enough money for a firearm, but didn't want to be in violation of the law, so the city council took up a collection and bought her one.

Wisconsin isn't good yet, but hopefully will be in a year. There are no restrictions at all EXCEPT for a 48 hr waiting period for buying handguns and no CCW. We recently even got state pre-emption.

We might be lucky enough to have CCW by the end of the year. If we don't have it in two or three years, we probably never will.

Louisiana = Very Good!

(Governer Foster recently RECOMMENDED that women learn to use handguns and buy them for self defense!)

waiting periods...

don't really bother me that much. Don't get me wrong, in an ideal world they wouldn't exist; but I'm willing to deal with waiting periods so long as there aren't any bans on mags and guns. I guess living in CA for so long has given me modest goals. I figure, when you own more than a dozen guns, who cares if you have to wait a few days for your next toy?

Also, I'll keep editing my earlier post to add more states to the "good" and "bad" lists, so that they can all be in one organized place.

Thanks for all the input so far, I appreciate it!

RI = Bad.
Very few are allowed to get a carry permit in RI.

I do wish we had universal open carry, though.

y'all can throw Michigan on the good side...

class 3 a bit harder to do, but doable... (or so I'm told...)

wiating periods are only a couple minutes (instant checks)

mags can be as large as you like, providing it was made before '94...

and CCW is "shall issue"...

and you can shoot ant ammo you can find, load, or conjure...

I'll second Utah as a great state for gun owners. Just don't try to get a drink there.

Live in Arkansas, now. Nothing's illegal. No waiting periods or prohibitions on private sales. Many gun shops openly display machine guns and silencers (although I was never into that sort of stuff). Permits are shall issue but expensive (about $250 by the time you get everything) and there are so many restrictions on where you can carry that it is not really all that useful.

PA= Good, however former Philly mayor/DNC Chairman Ed Rendell is way ahead in the polls in the race for Governor, so things might take a bad turn come November.

Texas = good.....in terms of carry rules and laws and "justification to the defense of" laws.

I didn't think that Tennessee, TX and PA were Class 3 friendly... but I guess they have shall issue CCW? If so I'll put them square in the good side of the list.

Also, are you sure Rhode Island is bad? I would have though it would have been neutral; not on the good list but also not on the bad list. Oh well, I'll put it in bad for now.

Remember, if a state prohibits CCW, it's not necessarily bad, it just can't be good. e.g. Kansas is OK.

Pennsylvania good (yes, they have Class 3). That's where I shot my first machine guns.

Virginia good.

This doesn't fall [squarely] under the stated criteria for "bad", but "silencers" are illegal in VT. In effect, an mp5sd is illegal there.
