Mini Sniping
During a discussion in this thread, I promised I'd post a link to this article.
I have limited space, so I may not keep it there forever. If you want to keep a copy on your computer, you can download the files in a zip file here.

I've been looking for a copy of this article for years.
Thanks! It's saved on the HD and printing for the archive as we speak.

ohhhhh.... this looks like fun.
All of a sudden though, I'm starting to think about that bucket of little green army men my brother used to have... Maybe dip their helmets in some powder blue paint for a little extra fun? -K |

So hitting army men at 50 yds with a .22 would be equivelent to what, hitting an Al Queda at 1000 yds with a 40mm?

We always set "dip cans" out at 100 yards on the backdrop at the range and shoot those. Not an incredibly hard target with the .22, but it is fun to watch them fly around when you shoot them. We buy shredded beef jerky in these cans on the way to the range. You get a target and a snack.
I also like shooting old hard drives with 163 gr. .30-06 AP. The AP is not necessary, FMJ will still demolish it, it is just more fun. I am going to have to pick up a bag of army men the next time I am at the store. One of my favorite targets is the clothes pins holding up my friend's target. -SquirrelNuts

Some years ago I got into a version of this. I used a Remington 40X .22 LR with a Leupold M8-12X scope. The target is a 100 yard reduced outline representing a man 1000 yards away.
Fun, and cheaper than high-power. Another version needs a shooting buddy. Make up reduced targets in camo colors, and take turns placing them at odd ranges up to 100 yards. The challenge is to spot all targets and hit them, firing ONE shot per target in a time limit. The shooter doesn't watch while the other man places the targets, so you have to look for them. The same games can be played in the back yard with a pellet rifle. |

One of the targets that my buddies and I like to shoot at....
left over 12gauge shotgun hulls that tend to plague just about every single make shift shooting area or non-managed shooting range. Find an appropriate backstop, throw a couple of them out there and start shootin. Hit them just right and the bullet will kick them a couple feet in the air and sometimes they'll land a couple dozen feet away. It's fun with a handgun at closer distances and shooting at them until they get too far out of range for you. Then switch over to the scoped 22 rifle and keep goin, they can get to be a pretty small target with range and pretty darn fun. Just gotta make certain you have the right area for this, bullets are gonna bounce off the ground if you aren't careful and don't have a proper backstop. |
