What is the "State Defense Force"??
In researching my "The Case for an Active Unorganized Militia in the War On Terrorism" post, http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...threadid=82603 - I found the "Virginia State Defense Force". I had no idea what that is (was) and others I'd asked had no answers. After posting (and a day or two of home chores) I searched the web under key phrase "State Defense Force", getting over 30 hits.
It seems that the State Defense Force program is a congressional "permission" for states to have (essentially) a "State Guard" to replace the National Guard units when called to federal duty. This article discusses the SDF program: http://www.eoni.com/~jdeshiro/sdf/what.html . A 1995 article - how current today - who knows?? And there is a national organization of State Guards at http://www.sgaus.org/index.html . The Virginia SDF appears to be rather dormant - their web site hasn't been updated since '98 and the email addres gives a bounce - http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/9564/main.html Judging only by my quick scans of sites, I'm not yet convinced that the case I make for the Unregulated Militia is circumvented by SDF's. I've added this thread believing that this subject will bring different responses than my Unorganized Militia thread. Anyone have good info to add? -Andy . |
