With good quality ammo, all the major calibers (9mm and up) perform well enough assuming you can hit your target well and repeatedly

45=bigger hole, find it everywhere.
357sig=more penentration with FMJ. Harder to find. Quite a bit of muzzle blast. |

Just my opinion, I think the 45acp is the superior round with any equal platform to launch from. More reliable feeding, less muzzel blast, bigger hole in target without having to depend on a "hollow point" and you can find it in most gun shops.
Handguns are poor stoppers. If you are carrying something that needs a hollow point (that may or may not open at pistol velocity) then you better buy the best ammo you can find. 25 |

I have a better question, which is better, a MACK Truck, or a Hot Rod muscle car. Don't read into this...

I have three 45 ACPs, but no 357 SIGs
I don't like the 357 SIG's recoil signature; kinda too snappy for this old man ("Why I don't need a 10mm").

I have a number of guns in both calibers. I dont see any real difference in recoil between the two. Both are very accurate and easy to shoot. I doubt it really matters on people, as long as you do your part.
I believe the FBI tests have given the .357SIG a very good report, especially when it comes to penetrating barriers.(the .45 can be kind of iffy here) I know a number of government, state, and police agency's have gone to it. Its ballistics are pretty much in the same class as the 125 gr .357mag, and only about 75fps +/- slower from most commercial "practice" loads I've seen info for, and some of the "carry" ammo can be quite a bit hotter. I now normally carry a SIG P220 in .45, but I've been finding myself shooting my P226 in .357SIG more and more of late. It also fits in my P220's holsters, so it may soon be riding there as well. |

I own and shoot both calibers and I am here to tell you the 357 Sig is a lot snappier, has a flame, is noisy. I enjoy shooting both bit I would opt for a 45acp. Regards, Richard

Further reading on this , there is a good article in American Handgunner that says the bullet design isn't up to the 357 mag that the police want. They had to go to a 125 grain 9mm bullet for good feeding and the same balistics could be reached with a +P+ 9MM.
If it takes a hollow point to be effective I just wonder if it any better. 25 |
