Guys - Let's remember that not everyone who you'll see out there who looks like they're from the middle east is a terrorist, or terrorist sympathizer. PLEASE, let's try to talk to any friends who may consider this an excuse for open season on those folks, and try to calm 'em down... I'm personally worried for several of my coworkers, should any sort of "retribution" start taking place... These folks are now naturalized citizens, and good people, and we can't blame them, based upon their heritage, for the acts of foreigners.

That said, we need to figure out where this started, and turn the place into a very large parking lot.

Apparently FIVE flights hijacked:

- AA flt 11 f/Boston to LA (second plane to hit towers) 757 acft 81
souls onboard

- United 175 f/Dulles or f/Boston to LA (reporters confused) (possibly
first acft to hit WTC)

- AA flt 77 f/Dulles to LA, 54 souls on board; possible 767, poss 757,
with crew, 64 persons on board (possibly acft which hit Pentagon)

- United flt 93 f/Newark to San Francisco (crashed at Camp David - no
real damage) 757 acft, other reports say this is the acft which crashed at
Somerset County, approx 80 miles southeast of Pittsburg PA

- Currenly not clear if fifth plane is involved but one source says UA 93
crashed at Camp David. Other source says UA 93 crashed in PA (as
above)

From what I understand is, if you get the top floors going down, they will take the levels below with them as the go! So, the planes could have done the damage to take the towers out.

I saw one of the towers fall while I was at work looking out the window.

Along the lines of the Taliban and Arafat professing innocence, is there any news from Iraq? They've certainly got the motive for such a despicable act; we've been hitting them pretty hard and apparently they shot down another unmanned reconnaisance aircraft today. The Evil Person in Charge over there has been squirreling away what money they make from "humanitarian" oil sales for non-humanitarian purposes, and so certainly has the funds available to bankroll this operation.

I want to thank you all for posting news snippets here. I'm getting more info here than I am from the networks - CNN is wasting air time interviewing grief counselors for crissakes! The rest of them are playing tape of the WTC over and over again between getting "reactions" from people who know nothing about it.
Let's try and be careful to attribute sources as we post. If it's just a rumor, please say so.

A "rumor": A "large middle-eastern newspaper" reported 3 weeks ago that Bin Laden had announced he was going to make a major strike on American soil "very soon". Anybody know what newspaper they are talking about and can we get a link to see what was actually said?

If it's Bin Laden we'll no doubt be striking Afhanistan very soon, and no doubt hitting empty targets that are well prepared for such retaliation - or targets that have been prepared by moving in innocent civilians.


This is a major mess and not just a security issue. Stand by for the stock markets to take a dive when they re-open tomorrow. Stand by for the oil spigots in the the middle east to tighten up after we retaliate.
Despite that, I hope Bush has the cajones to take action - we can't let them blackmail us into submission.

Just got of the phone with my wife. Her best friend is fron NY and her mom just quit a job at the trade center!

She indicated that a local high school had just moved some classes to the Trade Center this year due to crowding. Not what I wanted to hear.

Bogie is right about not accusing folks who look like Middle Easterners. I remember attending the Oktoberfest in New Braunfels, Texas shortly after the Iranians took the embassy hostages. As the beer flowed, the crowd got very ugly, chanting "Death to Iran!" I worked at that time in the foreign students office at the University of Texas, and there were a couple of guys that I recognized as Iranian students. They had a look of abject terror in their eyes as they tried to get away from the place. My roommate, who was of Czech extraction but had the misfortune that evening to have olive skin and black hair, was threatened by a couple of goons. We left immediately; it was very unpleasant and very scary.

While I would not ever condone what the revolutionary Iranians did, those guys I recognized weren't revolutionaries. They were just students. Years later I found out that my (future) wife had an Iranian girl as a housemate who was in the U.S. and could not go back because her father was hanged in Iran because he was B'nai Brith.

We must take decisive and strong action over this, but we must not overreact.
