BTW (and all due respect to anyone who works/volunteers) I just went to the Red Cross, and they were turning people away because their staff weren't due in until this afternoon. This particular Red Cross facility is about a mile from the hospital where the Pentagon victims are being taken. News from Long Island.

The roads, trains and buses into and out of NYC have all been closed. Police are turning back anyone trying to enter the city at the Queens border.

Local fire and Police dept' have been asked to send in people to help out in NYC. At least one County cop I know was called in to go to the city. Fire sirens have been going off regularly.

NYC hospitals are running out of blood and medications to treat burns.

Heard from a woman in Queens that it is "Snowing" outside. Ash from the collapse no doubt.

Lots of people around with family working in NYC, going to be a rough few days for many.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.

• In the first attack, a plane hits the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapse.

• About an hour later, a plane crashes into the Pentagon, part of which later collapses.

• American Airlines tells CNN that it lost two planes, both en route to Los Angeles: American Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard is lost. This is believed, but not confirmed, to have been one of the planes that crashed into the trade center. ... American Flight 77, a Boeing 757 from Washington Dulles airport to Los Angeles with 58 passengers and six crew is unaccounted for. The jet that crashed into the Pentagon may have been this one, but that is still unknown.


• United Airlines loses two planes: United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashes near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police say initial reports indicate no survivors. ... United confirms the crash of Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles with 56 passengers and seven crew aboard. It's possible, but not confirmed, that this is the second plane that hit the World Trade Center.

• The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington are evacuated.

• President Bush calls the crashes "a national tragedy." Later in the day, Bush issues a statement from Barksdale AFB near Shreveport, Louisiana. "Make no mistake: The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts."

• In the first-ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide are stopped at their departure airports.

• International flights are initially diverted to Canada; FAA says later, however, that 22 U.S.-bound international flights will be allowed to land.

• Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, says in reaction to the terror attacks that "we want to tell the American children that Afghanistan feels your pain and we hope that the courts find justice."

• In New York, more than 10,000 rescue personnel rush to the scene. Evacuation of lower Manhattan begins.

• Israel evacuates all of its missions around the world.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta is evacuated. CDC prepares bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.

• Philadelphia landmarks are evacuated.

• In Chicago, the Sears Tower is evacuated; United Nations in New York is evacuated.

• The New York Port Authority closes all bridges and tunnels into the city.

These coordinated events are clearly an act of war against the United States of America. Our president and government should (and I'm sure they are) treating it as such. We will find who is responsible and we will retaliate. Not to do so is unthinkable. If, as some have suggested, it is of Middle Eastern state sponsored terrorism in origin, we will "bomb it, pave it, and stripe it!"

Is there any other info about this, or any verification at all...that is a stunning rumor and if verified, those people are heroes of the highest order.

Just heard that there is limited subway and LIRR access out of the city (Penn Sta., Brooklyn, and Queens) to long island as well as free circle line ferry access to NJ. nothing is being allowed in though.

First, let us all take a minute to pray for not only those who have lost their lives today but for those who are working so quickly to help keep some form of peace in the cities. Second, I hope everyone realizes the magnitude of the events we are witnessing today. This is our lifetime's "Pearl Harbor" and because of numerous amount of countries this affects (remember the towers are home to many offices of business from aboard), we are seeing the end of the world as we know it unfold today. This is not to say the world is about to end, but all people will never look at the world the same way again.

Early heros are starting to shine,

I have heard a report (CNN) that the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was brought down by the pilot while the passangers attacked the hijacker.

Also, Newsmax.com is reporting that a 911 phone call was made from a Cellular phone on that flight. This means we shall soon have audio tapes of that event.

It is starting to sound like that pilot and those folks gave their lives to save perhaps thousands. Each one of us should be so fortunate to perform with such valor.

This may be premature, but "IMHO" this has Saddam written all over it. This involved multiple hijackers who were capable of flying commercial jets (each plane probably had a backup crew- most likely military trained). Bin Laden may have directed this, but if Saddam isn't involved I'll eat a camel.

- Reported as a 757 or a 767 crashed in Somerset County, PA,
approx 80 miles east/southeast of Pittsburgh, PA

Washington, D.C. September 11, 2001 -- In response to the apparent terrorist events, FEMA's Washington-based Emergency Response Team (EST) has fully activated and on 24-hour operations. All 10 of the FEMA regions - headquartered in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Denton, TX, Denver, San Francisco and Bothell, Wash. - are also fully activated.

FEMA has activated the Federal Response Plan, which brings together 26 federal agencies and the American Red Cross to assist local and state governments in response to national emergencies and disasters. Already, FEMA has deployed eight Urban Search & Rescue teams (US&R) to New York City to search for victims in the affected buildings. US&R teams are specially trained teams that include engineers and other technical experts as well as specially trained search dogs. Another four teams have been deployed to the Pentagon, for search and rescue efforts there.

In addition, disaster medical teams and disaster mortuary teams are on stand-by in New Jersey and Washington D.C. to respond when requested. FEMA has requested that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers handle debris removal in the affected areas.

FEMA support is working closely with the White House to ensure coordination and management of the consequences of the events. The Department of Justice has immediate responsibility for crisis management.
