The pack checks out the new guy on the block...

The newest pack member came home tonight, a Smith & Wesson Model 19-5 (circa 1983-84), 6" barrel.

The other members of Mike's Pack S&W just had to check out the new guy...

The new guy is muzzle pointing right...

The rest of them, from top around the circle to the bottom...

Model 042, .38 Spl.

Model 1917, Brazilian Contract, .45 ACP

Model 24-3, .44 Spl. (which 34 days ago was the newest member of the pack)

Model 58, .41 Mag.

Model 28, .357 Mag., wearing fancy dress

Model 19, .357 Mag., my old war horse.

Missing from the family portrait are the Model 19 2.5", which is doing duty with my parents, my Model 28 6", which is apart on my work bench, the Model 38, and the Regulation Police in .32 Long.

This photo, beyond a shadow of a doubt, proves my bias against all things Smith & Wesson...

Mike, what is the 58 (and looks the same as some of the others) wearing?

I need to find someone with a digital camera. Just put some stag on my 57.

MD,

Hogue Monogrips.

The Model 19 6" is wearing a set of Pachmayers. I shot 50 rounds through it this evening, and the grips just positively STINK.

I tried to get a set of Hogue Monogrips to put on, but they were out of square butt grips. Sigh...

Oh, the 19 4" is wearing a set of Farrar grips, a monogrip that is a gold plated biach to put on/get off.

HOLY CRAP!!!

I had to get the grip box out of my closet to figure out the manufacturer (the original grips for the 19 are in the box, and what else is in there but the original purchase papers!

January 15, 1994.

I paid $265 for the 19 4".

Wow.

Obvious bias.

A lovely collection of well crafted, real steel, shootable handguns.

Not a one of them a shoddily made, over priced product of the new, government controlled, Smith n Wesson.

Thanks for the pick Mike.

I must be as biased as you,Mike.I was at the gynshop yesterday, getting some work done on my 38/44,and when I left, this old relic followed me home. Victory model S&W in .38 S&W bored out to .38 special, nickel plated at some time after the war, lanyard ring removed and the hole plugged. It looked so pathetic, sitting next to those shiny K38s and model 10s that I couldn't resist.

Frosty,

I reporting putting this on lawaway (I'm using that on purpose this time. ) a couple of weeks ago.

I couldn't pick it up due to Virginia's 1 gun a month law.

The new guy in town looks like he belongs right there. But Wait! It looks as if the older members of the pack are starting to gang up on him. Yes! They now have him cornered with all their muzzles pointing straight at him! Tune in next month for Episode 29!

I still like your Model 28 the best and yet the 042 is so sweet and gentle. On the other hand .... Aw hell, I like 'em all!

BTW, could you have found a busier background! It's hard to pick out the hammers and triggers on it.

I must agree with Roger on this one. Rubber grips on revolvers (especially blue revolvers) are an abomination. I've got to hurry up and get some wood myself for my Taurus 605 (though somehow it seems like less of a sacrilege on a Taurus than on a classic S&W).

I also must agree with Mal about the M28. Really nice! I didn't use to like ivory or fake ivory grips but lately... On a blued revolver there isn't much that looks better.

The Hogues stay, Chaim.

If I ever find a set of wood grips that I like even half as much as the Monogrips, then maybe I'll consider switching.

The ivory grips are billed as "cultured" ivory.

If that's the same as cultured marble, it means that it's real ivory (powdered) in a polymer binder of some type...

Mal,

Yeah, the background is kind of busy. I'll have to retake the pix and see what I come up with on a more neutral background.

I couldn't find the table cloth that I wanted to use, so I used the coverlet.

Yeah, the 28 is a real sweetie. No doubt about it. I got that one off a old hillbilly at a gunshow, private purchase, for $250. It didn't even have a dragline around the cylinder.

Okay, I am getting confused. I can't keep track of your acquisitions anymore. Color me lost.

"I couldn't pick it up due to Virginia's 1 gun a month law."

That's ONE thing we don't have up here in Massachusetts (yet), but they are trying. "They" claim that limiting honest citizens to one gun a month will prevent bad guys from getting guns and selling them to other bad guys (aka trafficking).

Go figure.

Tablecloth belongs on table. Keeps gun parts from getting scratched.

Lace over fine linen is excellent, keeps small screws and springs from rolling away.

Where did you get them? Do you know if they sell them for Colt Police Positives or for Taurus 85/605s?

Oh, and on the wood. I know I'm odd on this but I actually find wood grips on revolvers to be much more comforable than most rubber grips. The only rubber grips I can deal with are the ones that don't cover the backstrap. If the rubber encompasses the backstrap the rubber that contacts my hand near the webbing of my thumb gives me a "rug burn". That probably has a little to do with my prejudice against rubber grips (though I still think the wood or Ivory or fake Ivory looks better on blued revolvers).

Chaim,

The ivory grips came from Boone Trading Company.

Here's the web link for the grips...

http://www.boonetrading.com/Pg14.html

Price is very reasonable, too. I'm thinking of getting a set for my Model 19 2.5"

Gum,

Quite a few TFLers have fired a variety of my Smiths.

Mal shot the 042, 28, 58, and 1917 a couple of weeks ago when I was out there trying to collect ticks from his property.

Speaking of which, Mal, no ticks -- the collection process was a failure. We'll have to try again soon.

Mike, thanks for the Boone Trading Co info. You were right about it being reasonable. I just picked up a set of grips for my 18-2. Price was $28.

Won't be available for 6-8 weeks though.

Mike - How did the Boone Trading Company grips fit? Tightly? Any overlaps? Thanks and God bless. Hugh
