Ammunition trailer crashes, ties up traffic
By Blair Anthony Robertson -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Sunday, April 14, 2002
SACRAMENTO COUNTY -- Westbound traffic on Interstate 80 near Madison Avenue backed up for nearly nine hours Saturday after a van towing a trailer carrying ammunition and gunpowder lost a wheel and overturned.

Acting with caution, the California Highway Patrol shut down two westbound lanes from 7:37 a.m. to 4:20 p.m., creating a massive traffic jam.

The van driver, who works for a company that transports ammunition, was not cited and refused treatment at the scene for his minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Authorities said there were 15,000 rounds of ammunition and 130 pounds of gunpowder in the trailer.

The Sacramento County hazardous response team was one of several agencies that responded to the crash site, where authorities created a buffer around the trailer in case of an explosion. The ammunition was loaded onto another truck and eventually hauled away.
Unreleated news, a TFL Gathering in Sacramento County was scrubbed for unknown reasons.

15,000 rounds? I think that would be enough for about 2 minutes on the Knob Creek firing line.

Van towing a trailer? 15,000 rounds and 130lbs of powder isn't much. I can cram that into the back of my buddy's F-150 along with two coolers and a generator to power the TV so we can watch the race, and it's MUCH safer than towing... oh well.

Duh?

Could somebody be so kind as to explain just how this explosion is supposed to have been possible?

Sounds like a MIWALL rep got into a bit of an accident. They go around making wholesale drop offs of their generic manufactured ammo as well as name brand stuff. Used to know acouple of the guys pretty well. They also do gunshows around CA and Nevada.

Couple years ago here in DC we had a tractor trailer flip on one of the ramps leading to I-95.

It was carrying something like 20,000 pounds of black powder.

Can you say traffic problems during rush hour?

Nuts. Had I had known, I would have been the first one there to help with the clean up.
