Not necessarily brand or model specific...

... but if I were limited to only one, I'd go with a 4", medium frame .357, most likely a Ruger GP100 or a S&W 586/686, although I wouldn't rule out a 19/66.

I generally prefer shooting my Sigs, but I don't think there is any single pistol more versatile than a .357.

Now, if I were regularly in large bear country, I might look at a .44mag, .45colt, or .454, but I'm not, so I don't need the added recoil, mass, or ammo cost.

It depends

For combat agaist thin skinned people the .45 1911 is hard to beat. If it was for general purpose agaist anything including bears I would say a S&W 29 with a 5" barrel. I bought the redhawk due to pure strenth, but the 29 feels better balanced in the hand and I've been impressed with the versatility of 44 caliber magnum handguns. I think more than any other caliber. 44 specials to full house buffalo bore and everything in between!!!! If I was a city dweller with but one gun for all occasions, a high cap 9 would be fine, but so would a 40! A .357 would also be a good choice for people who can't handle the .44mag! I used to be scared to shoot a dirty harry gun but they grow on you!

What disappoints me in this poll is the low numbers for Colt, Cz and HK. Speically, Cz andHk. Thier is so much fuss about them yet when it comes to chosing just one handgun they are not even remotely near the top contenders like Glock, SW and Ruger

This one is really tough. I would pick a S&W model 27 with an 8 3/8 barrel. The only reason I picked that one besides being one of my favorite guns, is that I can shoot it DA and SA. My first love will always be my Ruger Blackhawk 6 1/2 .38/.357, but the Smith has more flexibility.

If I could only have one it would be my Colt Python. I carry a S&W M&P 45. If I only could have one it would be the Python because it is so much more versitle.

The fact I wouldn't pick my CZ as my one gun isn't a knock on the CZ, it's a knock on the lack of versatility in a 9mm semiauto.

I can use it for SD, and I can shoot targets with it.

Let me revise that: I'm sure I could use it extremely effectively for SD, and I can shoot one hole targets with it all day at ranges to 10 yards (granted it ends up being a large hole after 50 or 100 rounds, but it's usually one big hole), and score 9,10, and x all day at 25yds.

What I would not want to do with my CZ75B is hunt game, and therefore I don't consider it a good hiking/survival all around gun. If I'm going to have one gun, it will have to do it all. For me, this means a sturdy .357mag at the low end to a .454 casull at the high end.

The only auto I would consider for this sort of versatility would be the Glock 20, but the ammo is a lot harder to find (usually) than .357 or .44mag, and if I could only have one gun, I'd want to be able to find ammo...

Can you imagine the most expensive of the semi autos i.e. Desert Eagle by IMI is not preferred by anyone here?

I am wondering that people who voted for SW, actually voted for their semi autos or six shooters?

I voted Ruger with the GP100 in mind.

Easy answer. Smith and Wesson 629, 4 inch. Extremely versatile for me. Mine pulls CCW duty, HD duty, and anything else I can think of. Accurate, handy, wide range of power, weather resistant and I've got a lot of trigger time on N frames so its like an extension of my hand. Plus if things really get bad, it'll make a better club than anything polymer.
