CCI .22LR "Velocitor" - Ballistic Jell-O Test
Had a chance to test CCI's new .22LR Velocitor (40gr HP @ 1425fps) ammo into a block of 10% ballistic gellitin. Used a Marlin 39A rifle, 24" barrel w. peep-sights. Tested it against CCI Stinger (32gr HP @ 1640fps) because it is a proven performer in this rifle.
Terminal performance test - 2 shots each, range 25 yards: Penetration / Expanded Diameter / Recovered Wt. Velocitor-1 / 11" / .35 cal / 39gr Velocitor-2 / 10.25" / .35 cal / 38gr perfect mushroom (actually looked just like a mushroom) Stinger-1 / 8" / .38 cal / 26gr Stinger-2 / 6" & 8.5" / fragmented / 23gr (2 pieces) complete expansion, looked like the top of a mushroom with no stem the one that fragmented had the outer .35 caliber ring of expanded lead break off at 6" and the short .22 caliber core continued to 8.5" Accuracy test - 10 shots each, range 25 & 100 yards, sandbag rest: 25 yards / 100 yards Velocitor / 1.125" / 2" Stinger / 1.25" / 2.25"* *eyes were getting a little tired of squinting thru the peep sight on the last few rounds My thoughts: if the target was small & light, like crows, I'd use the Stinger but, for bigger & heavier varmints, like groundhogs, I'll use the Velocitor.

Cool. I need a .22. If I get one I will use the Stingers because we have a crow problem at our house. The things tear our garbage up. Where can I get ballistic gelatin?

To much Time on his hands
As an eye witness to the testing I can verify the results. However I am thoroughly convinced that Dave has way too much time on his hands considering he just had a new baby girl. I also question the validity of his "my eyes were getting tired" statement, he is always making excuses in the goose blind like that.

I've killed 3 groundhogs with my 77/22 and Velocitor ammo this year. 1 was a one shot kill at 40 yds. (neck shot) 1 took 2 shots. 1st shot went through the chest cavity, 2nd, between the shoulder blades and through the neck. The last one took 1 round through the chest and ran off screaming. I found him DAO the next day.
Terminal performance of this ammo is very good for a 22. It also shoots about .5" at 50 yds from my rifle! |

Jaeger
Do you have any modifications on that 77/22, or is it out of the box? I have not tried the Velocitor bullets in my 77/22, but with cheap ammo I can usually get 2 shots touching and one of them is always a flyer (there is a possibility the problem could lie in the shooter). I think I need to go out and get me some of this ammo anyway. Maybe I will have good luck with it. |

It's a stainless, all weather model with a trigger job and a cheap Simmons 4X scope. Otherwise, it's stock. It's always been a great shooter for me. It's accounted for a LOT of game!

Thanks for the test. I decided I love Velocitors because they are not only fast, but a full 40 grains. It is good to know they will go 10-11" from a 24" barrel, but what I really want to know is which ammo will go over 12 inches from a short barrel -- say, a new Walther P22.
BTW, the Velocitor does not feed in the P22 because of the flat point. I want to try CCI "Silhouette" because it is also full weight and fast, but a round nose. |
