Possibly the best source for this will be S&W themselves.
In the recent past S&W has made limited runs of stainless steel revolvers with a dead black finish. I'm sure the S&W Performance Shop could answer any questions. Usually the factory is VERY competitive on both price and turnaround time for gun work. While there are various ways stainless can be blackened, the method used by S&W was a very durable, and good looking method. Black Chrome is a glossy black finish, BUT.... It's not durable at all. It's actually a decorative finish that's about as durable as the old bright Nickel, which is to say, it scratches and wears easily. |

There are metalurgical issue's with heating stainless in the same manor as blued steel .
I was playing around with bluing guns ...i was pretty good ... just lots of work ....but fun . We played around with several grades of stainless ....just to get a color change we had to heat the salts over 1000 ...need less to say we were just doing a small controled test . The stainess looked ok ...For burnt and tarneshed stainless ...It never took the bluing .... I'm sure S&W's process is some kind of metallic anodizing . You can try that route , but as the other gentalmen had stated the finish dose wear . Just my 2 cents . |
