Remington 870 Special

I need some assistance. I have a 1985-vintage Remington 870 "Special". It has a straight (English) butt stock and a 21" (I think) vent rib barrel.

I just ordered and received a Knoxx SpecOps recoil reducing stock, which included a forestock. The butt stock part of the Knoxx stock fits great, but the forestock won't work because my forend tube is too short. The threaded portion of the tube is not long enough to stick out the front end of the forestock to allow the retainer nut to be put on. In fact, it's a good 2" short.

I called Knoxx (aka Blackhawk), and they were no help. I called Remington, and they were also no help. They said all forend tubes on 870's are the same length. Now, I know for a fact that the Knoxx stock is designed to work on 870's, and know people have used them on 870's. So, what gives?

The tube portion of the forend tube on my 870 Special is 4-1/4" long. Did the Specials have shorter than normal forestocks, and therefore shorter forend tubes?

I may have answered my own question. I just went a-Googlin', and found some info on the 870 Special Field. It has a shorter magazine tube than other 870's. And, although I can't find anything stating it explicitly, I deduced that it also has a shorter forestock, and therefore a shorter forestock tube.

So now I need to find a different 870 to turn into an HD gun.

Anyone interested in a nice 870 Special Field?

You are correct the 870 special field will not accept standard 870 barrels or stocks. If I didn't already own one I would take you up on the offer, it is my favorite 870.

Good luck and Be Safe

Actually, after sleeping on it (sleeping on the dilemma....not the gun), I think I'm going to hang onto it. I kind of like the idea of it being a little out of the ordinary as far as 870's are concerned. I'm going to put the wood back on it and look for another 870 for HD.

Good idea. The Special field guns are pretty rare and should be left alone. There are millions of standard 870's that would make a great HD gun.

Yeah, in retrospect, I don't know what I was thinking. My impulsiveness strikes again. Midway had the Knoxx stock on sale, and I thought "hey, I have an 870 in the safe that's not doing anything. I think I'll put a tacticool stock on it. Never mind that it only holds three shells, It'll be fine"

Thanks for the information and advice.
