Cops: Man Stalked Woman For 25 Years
Arrest Warrant Issued After Alleged Kidnap Attempt
Sept. 7, 2000

John Douglas: Stalking and Obsession

RIDGEFIELD, Wash. (APBnews.com) -- A 45-year-old man who has been stalking a
former college acquaintance for 25 years is being sought for allegedly
trying to kidnap her over the weekend, authorities said today.

An arrest warrant has been issued for John Flora, who lives in the Seattle
area, after he broke into the home where the woman is staying and tried to
abduct her, Clark County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Shea said.

This was the second time in a week that Flora allegedly broke into the home
of the woman's mother in this small city near Vancouver, Shea said.

The woman, who is in her mid-40s, lives about 150 miles away in the Seattle
area, but has been staying with her mother recently, he said.

Intruder fought off

The woman and Flora dated for a few months in college about 25 years ago,
Shea said. He has been stalking her periodically since then, and has been
convicted at least once of breaking into her home, Shea said.

Flora apparently tracked the woman here to her mother's home and startled
them shortly before 10 p.m. on Aug. 27, when he walked into the living room
while they were watching television, he said.

He allegedly jumped on top of the woman, pinned her on the couch and tried
to kiss and hug her, Shea said. Flora also professed his love for her and
tried to get her to accept an engagement ring, he said.

The woman and her mother fought him off and convinced him to leave by
promising not to call police, Shea said. The two women did not call police
because they feared retaliation from him, he said.

Second attack

But he returned at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and found the victim asleep in a
bedroom. The woman awoke to find a fully clothed Flora on top of her, Shea
said. She tried to fight him off as he kissed her, fondled her breast and
told her he loved her, Shea said.

Flora put the woman in a bear hug and tried to drag her out of the bedroom,
apparently to kidnap her. But her screams awakened her 67-year-old mother,
who scared off the intruder by firing a handgun shot into the floor and
threatening to shoot him, Shea said.

"He thought better of it and took off," Shea said.

The stalker was gone when sheriff's deputies arrived. Flora is being sought
on a burglary charge punishable by up to 25 years to life in prison and may
also face attempted kidnapping and stalking charges, Shea said.

Slow learners. Can't wait to read about his next attack. Hope he's just as slow. She'll get a 2nd chance for the shot.

Well, I'm certainly glad this woman is OK, and that her mother had the presence of mind to have a sidearm available for defense.

However, I'm confused otherwise. Did they give this guy a key to the place? I gather they have no perimeter alarm. Do they lock the doors and windows?

In my home, it would not be easy to stroll in. Between the alarm(s), dogs and locked doors and windows, some noise is likely to accompany such an attack. I would have thought the first attack would have at least prompted some other security measures.
