what would you get?

If you could not get a 223 or 22-250 what would you get for varmint and or Yote hunting?

.243 in a heartbeat. I roll my own, so cost isn't all that worrisome for 55 or 58gr loads. The only thing with larger or heavier chamberings is that it's not as easy to keep your shots within your scope (seein where you hit). It tends to buck the wind a might better than my friends .204. But that is a mighty fine ctg also.

With those choices the 22-250. But I would look at the .243 also. There all good for what you want.

.243 even if you could get 22.250 or 223......more versatile if you want to do something else with it, and like it has already said isn't as vulnerable to wind.

204 Ruger if dedicated for pure varmint hunting
243 Win for a general walk around rifle.
I'd probably pass on the excellent, but expensive 220 Swift.

The OP implies no little bitties, so I'd go with a .243. I've found that the 55-grain bullet does quite nicely on poor, innocent prairie dogs. Well, nicely for me; not nicely for them. Depends on whose viewpoint...

I really don't think they're all that innocent! My gut instincts tell me they're out there hunkered down in their wee little holes plottin and scheming on me behind my back. Oh yeah, they're out there, they're plottin, and they're hatin... that's how they roll.

1. 204 Ruger
2. 220 Swift
3. 243 Winchester

I didn't mention my own varment rifle because although it is a little more powerful than a 243, (like 30-06 is to 308) it got nosed out in popularity by the 243. 6M/M Remington.

Assuming a small caliber is a viable choice, I would go with the .220 Swift. Love it, but is more expensive than either the .223 or the .22-250, to buy new loads or to reload, (brass wise), I know, before I get hit over the head, the bullets are all compatible!

But if looking for versatility and still readily available almost anywhere, I would definitely say the .243.

I chose the 204 even when all options were available. My next addition will be a 243.

Choice between the 223 and the 22-250? Without hesitation, I would opt for the 22-250.

204 Ruger, it wasn't available when I was calling coyotes 10 years ago, but it would be my first pick today.

If grubbylabs is just considering alternative itty-bitties to the .223 and .22-250, I figure that there ain't no flies on either the .204 or the Swift.

Anybody tried this new version of Remington's .17 centerfire? I've read that it doesn't foul barrels like the original effort.

Another option is the .222 Remington. Lots of people like that round.

Of the 2 you asked about, the 22-250. I am really liking the Ruger 204 though......
